Lacrosse Falls to #16 Loyola Maryland 17-4

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – The American University lacrosse team was defeated by #16 Loyola 17-4 on the road today, dropping their first Patriot League game of the season. 

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Senior captain Maddy Spratt led the offensive effort for American, scoring twice and putting all four of her shots on goal. She also collected three draw controls and a ground ball. 
  • Becca Frank scored on an assist from Alyssa Apuzzo, and Annabelle Jackson converted a free position opportunity to round out the scoring for AU. 
  • Reagan Murdoch was active in the offensive end, getting loose for four shots, but couldn't find the back of the net. 
  • American was outpaced in total shots 35 to 14, and 24 to 11 in shots on goal. 
  • Caleigh Forti made the start for the Eagles in goal and made seven saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Greyhounds fired away at goal from the opening possession, winning the opening draw control and letting off four shots before Georgia Latch scored at the 10:28 mark. 
  • Caleigh Forti did well to keep AU in the game early, making five saves on 11 shots on goal and intercepting two passes to disrupt a few Loyola possessions. The Greyhounds ended the opening 15 minutes with a 6-0 lead. 
  • The Eagles had a stronger start to the 2nd quarter, winning the first three draw controls and scoring on a goal from Becca Frank on their first player-up opportunity of the game. Apuzzo made a pinpoint feed to Frank in front of goal to pickup her fourth assist of the season. 
  • Loyola answered with six straight goals, taking a 12-1 lead into the half. 
  • American didn't score again until the fourth quarter, when Spratt and Jackson found the back of the net. The Greyhounds added five more goals in the second half to make the final 17-4. 
  • Forti's seven saves brings her total to 27 on the year. 
NEXT UP

American will stay on the road next week for two out of conference matchups, at George Mason on Wednesday, Feb. 19, and at UMBC on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Eagles' next home game is slated for Wednesday, Feb. 26 against George Washington.
