Women’s Hoops Heads South, Visits Clemson Thursday Evening

WASHINGTON – American University women's basketball is heading to Clemson, S.C. to take on the ACC's Clemson in a Thursday night matchup. Opening tip between Eagles and the Tigers is set for 7 p.m. and the game will air on ACCNX.

  • For American and Clemson, this is the first time the two programs will be stepping out onto the hardwood to face off with each other.
AU Quick Hits
  • Kelly Killion earned her first win as a head coach on Saturday night when she led the team to a 66-63 win over Delaware State in the first game of the season. The teams were tied 31-all at halftime, and the contest came down to the wire, but the Eagles were able to grab the gritty win.
  • In the game against DSU, rookies Kayla Greyvensteyn and Charlotte Tuhy earned their first collegiate starts and made an immediate impact for the Eagles.
  • Three Eagles finished in double-digit scoring position against the Hornets. Molly Driscoll, Anna Rescifina, and Tuhy all dropped 10+ points, while Tuhy also crashed the boards consistently.
  • Tuhy, a 6'2 forward, took home a double-double in her first ever collegiate contest, dropping 13 points and led all players on the court with 13 rebounds. She also had four assists and played all but one minute on the hardwood.
  • Sophomore Driscoll led the charge for the Eagles with 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting on the evening. Driscoll played a full forty minutes in the contest.
  • The third Eagle in double digits was Rescifina, who tied Tuhy with 13 points. The senior went 7-of-10 from the line and had four rebounds to add to her line on the stat sheet.
  • Sophomore Madisyn Moore-Nicholson had a career night as well as the squad kicked off the season, matching her career-high of nine points while pulling down a new career-high seven rebounds.
Scouting Clemson
  • Starting out the season 2-1, the Tigers will be looking to extend get back to winning ways when American visits Littlejohn Coliseum on Thursday.
  • Across their opening three games, which saw wins against Upstate (76-38) and Mercer (72-51), and a loss to No. 2 South Carolina (73-65), the Tigers are averaging 61.7 points per game while holding opponents to 51.5. They hold a .417 field goal percentage and are averaging .380 rebounds per game.
  • The No. 2 South Carolina Gamecocks used a 20-2 fourth quarter to pull away from Clemson to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season. Senior guard Taylor Johnson-Matthews led the Tigers with nine points, while graduate forward Demeaera Hinds added eight points and a team-high six rebounds. Senior guard Mia Moore finished with seven points, and Rachael Rose contributed six on efficient shooting.
  • This is the 51st season of Clemson women's basketball and year two of the Head Coach Shawn Poppie era. As a head coach, Poppie holds an undefeated 4-0 record in season openers.
  • Last season, the Tigers went 14-17 overall and 6-12 in the ACC, but Clemson returns three major contributors from Poppie's first season that can build on their previous successes.
  • Senior guard Mia Moore (10.8 ppg), junior guard Hannah Kohn (9.2 ppg, 79 3FG), and senior forward Raven Thompson (6.0 ppg) are all back. The trio accounted for 60 percent of Clemson's school record 228 three-pointers.
  • The Tigers also added three freshmen and six players from the transfer portal, including two with ACC experience: graduate forward Demeara Hinds, junior guard/forward Rusne Augustinaite.
  • Last season the Tigers upset No. 19 Georgia Tech (68-61) and No. 20 Cal (69- 58) in Poppie's first season (2024-25) at Clemson, which marked the first time since 2022-23 and the third time since 2004 that Clemson defeated two or more ranked opponents in a season.
