LEWISBURG, Pa. – Day one of the Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships saw the American University track team break three school records, including one that had been standing for 51 years, and had multiple Eagles qualifying for day two event finals. Two records were set or re-set by freshman
Lorelei Bangit in the 200m and 400m dash, while classmate
Jason Omari-Anim topped the long-standing record in the men's 100m dash.
The second and final day of the PL Championships will begin tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
- In what was another display of excellence this season, first year sprinter Lorelei Bangit made a statement in the 400m semifinals. With her time of 55.44 she is not only moving on to tomorrow's event finals, she also re-set the benchmark, stamping a new school record into the books.
- Later in the day Bangit, in the 200m dash semifinals, went two-for-two on the day in school records. She managed to break her own record in the event with her finish of 24.75 and finished ninth overall.
- The women's 4x800m relay quartet of Lucia Ianello, Callia Cordasco, Kirah Tianga, and Kate Riley cracked the American University top-10 list. The quartet's time of 9:13.31 was a seventh place finish and earned a 10th place spot in the AU record books. They are the first team since 2018 to make an impact on the list.
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
- Jason Omari-Anim, a freshman sprinter, had added himself to the record books in the 100m dash three weeks prior and in his first time toeing the line since, he set the school record. Breaking a 51-year benchmark, Omari-Anim's time of 10.84 upset the previous record of 18.84 record set, and reset, by Wilbert Smith in 1970 and 1973.
- Hours later, in the 200m semifinals, Omari-Anim also set a personal best time in the 200m semifinals. It was enough to move the sprinter from 10th all time in the record books up to sixth.
- As for mid-distance, the sophomore combination of Kaden Kluth and Carver Morgan set to aggressive racing in the 800m dash semifinals. Kluth, only a few hundredths of a second off his fastest mark in the event with a time of 1:50.12, a time that earned him second all time in the American record books, earned fourth place. Morgan finished immediately behind him in fifth place and the duo will be moving on to the event finals tomorrow.
