WASHINGTON – The head coach of American University wrestling,
Jason Borrelli, will remain with the Eagles into a fourth season and beyond after agreeing to a four-year contract extension from Director of Athletics & Recreation Dr. Billy Walker.
"I am tremendously excited about extending Coach Borrelli's contract," said Walker. "He's done a fantastic job as a mentor and role model for his team, along with serving as a leader in our department, and across campus. His wrestlers perform superbly in the classroom, in the community, and on the mat. I'm particularly impressed with his team's compete level, as well as their focus and intensity. We are truly lucky to have Coach Borrelli on our staff."
Borrelli has been tasked with rebuilding a program that faced severe adversity during the pandemic with a near-total loss of its season as well as a coaching change.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to sign a long-term contract here at American University," said Borrelli. "This is an amazing institution, and it's humbling to know that Dr. Billy Walker and President Sylvia Burwell have confidence in me leading the wrestling program for years to come. I am committed to the AU model of striving for excellence on and off the mat.
"The past three years have convinced me that American can become a benchmark for academic success, compete for NCAA championships, and continue graduating future leaders. The support of our fans, donors, and alumni is invigorating, and I am excited to continue working tirelessly to make everyone proud."
Borrelli has coached two EIWA placewinners in each of the past two seasons after earning one podium finish in his first year. The Eagles were represented at the NCAA Championships in both 2023 and 2024, with 133-pounders
Jack Maida and
Maximilian Leete earning qualification in back-to-back seasons.
In 2022-23, the Eagles won seven more dual meets than they had in Borrelli's first season, and they tied that total with eight wins again in 2023-24. That number ties three previous AU teams in the past 13 years for most victories in a season.
Off the mat, Borrelli's teams have earned a 3.31 grade-point average in each of the last two semesters, and 10 wrestlers earned NWCA Scholar All-American distinction over his first two seasons.
Under Borrelli's leadership, the wrestling team's fundraising efforts have skyrocketed, outpacing all other programs in the department by a wide margin, and exceeding their yearly target. Additionally, fan engagement has dramatically increased with the addition of mat-side seating for home matches, and record-setting season ticket sales for the department.
