INDIANAPOLIS - The American University wrestling team will send a total of three student-athletes to Kansas City, Mo., for the 2024 NCAA Championships after it was announced Tuesday that graduate student
Will Jarrell and junior
Jack Maida are both alternates in the field. Junior
Maximilian Leete is an automatic qualifier for the Eagles at 133 pounds after placing fifth at the EIWA Championships.
Leete is 18-11 this season and had an outstanding showing at the conference meet, finishing well above his seed of 10th going in. He has five pins this season and 23 in his career at American to rank seventh all-time in program history.
Jarrell is 19-15 overall, leading the Eagles in wins this season, and placed ninth at the EIWA Championships at heavyweight. He has been named the first alternate in his weight class, and will compete if one other wrestler is forced to withdraw. Maida is 15-3 at 125 pounds this year and was ranked 28th in the most recent NCAA Coaches Rankings. He represented the Eagles at the 2023 NCAA Championships as an automatic qualifier, but recently defaulted to eighth place at the EIWA Championships after medically forfeiting on the second day. Maida is the second alternate at 125 pounds and will compete if two other wrestlers withdraw.
The full bracket and seeds for the NCAA Championships will be released on Wednesday, March 13 at 8 p.m. during a Selection Show on NCAA.com.
