BOSTON, Mass. – A select crew of 14 from the American track team competed at Boston University's Scarlet and White Invitational on Saturday. Two school records were broken by their current holders when both
Lorelei Bangit and
Fernando Ibarra set PRs in the 400m and 200m dashes respectively.
QUOTES FROM COACH GRAHAM
"We had a solid weekend of racing up in Boston. It was good to get the athletes on the track that the conference championships will be competed on at the end of the month," said head coach
Sean Graham. "
Lorelei Bangit once again stood out with a big 400m PR and lowering of the school record to 56.38, winning her heat handily; she's now currently sitting third in the Patriot League.
"
Fernando Ibarra had a standout day in the sprints, kicking things off with a new PR in the 60m only to follow up a few hours later, lowering his own indoor school record in the 200m.
Kaden Kluth had a nice debut in the 800m right at his indoor PR of 1:51. The men's mile had a good debut for
Nathan Reeves at 4:07, and
Carver Morgan lowering his PR to 4:08 for seventh all-time at AU.
"Across the board we had athletes racing very aggressively, often finding themselves leading their heats. We'll need to work a little more on closing races prior to the championships, but the confidence and determination shown today was a great sign of future success."
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
- Bangit missed out on her own record in the 200m dash by one one hundredth of a second before topping her own record in the 400m dash, crossing the line in 56.38. This PR in the 400m resets the school record Bangit set in competition at George Mason a week prior.
- Sophomore Grace Kirk took to the line in the 1000m dash after running the distance for the first time last week. Kirk finished in 3:01.20 and slotted herself at eighth all time on the school's top-10 performers list.
- Rachael Potter and June Mwaniki were the other two on the distance crew, competing in the 3000m and 5000m respectively. Potter improved on her time from last week, while Mwaniki bumped up from 3000m to 5000m for the first time this indoor season and finished sixth overall in the event.
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
- Ibarra started the day for the crew on by setting two PRs. First, the sophomore sprinter set a personal best in the 60m dash with a 7.06 time, reaffirming his spot at fourth on the AU top-10 performers list.
- In the 200m dash, Ibarra cracked his own record and reset the benchmark to 22.26.
- Danny O'Neill set himself a PR in the 1000m run. Finishing in 2:27.85, the junior reaffirms himself at 10th on the school's top-10 performers list.
- In the mile, sophomore Carver Morgan grabbed himself a two second PR when he finished in 4:08.53. With the time, Morgan finds himself at seventh all time in the record books.
- Another sophomore, Cooper Michaud, was five seconds faster in the 3000m than his previous attempt a week ago and got himself a personal best as a result.
