Lacrosse Looks for Third Straight Win Thursday Against George Mason

WASHINGTON – After defeating UMBC 14-10 over the weekend, the Eagles look to remain perfect on their homestand Thursday, February 29 against George Mason before hitting the road next week. The contest is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY 
  • The last two contests between the Eagles and Patriots are split 1-1, with each team winning by no more than three goals.
  • The two schools most recently faced two seasons ago on February 23, 2022, where American defeated George Mason 15-14 in Fairfax, Va.  
  • Then-freshman Maddy Spratt scored twice and had an assist in that matchup to give the Eagles an 8-2 lead that they would carry to the finish.  
SCOUTING AMERICAN 
  • The Eagles are 3-2 this season, after their weekend victory over UMBC.
  • Seven Eagles found the back of the net over the weekend against UMBC, with sophomore Reagan Murdoch netting a season-high five goals in the matchup. She also dropped a dime for a total of six points.
  • Junior goalkeeper Caleigh Forti made 14 saves over the weekend, improving her save percentage on the season to .527, third best in the Patriot League. She was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week on February 26. 
  • American also had a strong defensive showing against the Retrievers, with junior Jenna Walls leading the way with three caused turnovers and ground balls each. Freshman Deirdre Brown and junior Darby Sherrod accompanied these efforts with a pair of ground balls each and a caused turnover from Brown. 
  • Adding to the attack, senior Hannah Spease, junior Maddy Spratt, and sophomore Kellie Linehan all scored two goals apiece, tying the season-high of team goals so far this season. 
  • American will take to the road following their game against George Mason, facing both Iona and Lehigh before returning home on March 16 against Siena. 
SCOUTING GEORGE MASON 
  • The Patriots come to Jacobs trying to stay perfect on the season, posting their best start to a season in program history at 5-0. Most recently, the Patriots handily took down Gardner-Webb 19-11.
  • Graduate students Shannon Tuozzo (7) and Morgan Gunn (4) along with sophomore Kaitlyn Bestick (3) all netted season-high goal tallies. 
  • Riley Ellis proved decisive with her distribution, picking up a career-high four assists against the Bulldogs. 
  • Tuozzo leads the Patriots in goals with 20 and points with 24 on the season. Senior attacker Kate Elam leads the team in assists with 7, as well as scoring 4 goals and 11 points this season.
  • Defensively, sophomore midfielder Kaityln Bestick and senior defender Ciara Curtis both have six caused turnovers this season, while junior midfielder Lauren Distad has 31 draw controls.
  • George Mason leads the Atlantic Ten Conference in woman-down goals per game with three. 
  • Following the trip to American, George Mason will begin a two-game homestand against Delaware State University and the University of Massachusetts before traveling to Longwood University on March 13.
