Back in Bender, Women’s Basketball Hosts George Washington

WASHINGTON – The women of the American University women's basketball team is back in Bender for the first time in three weeks to face off with the Revolutionaries of George Washington on Monday, Dec. 16. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Series History
  • George Washington has an 18-13 edge in the series over American, including a 4-1 record in the five most recent matchups. The last time AU nabbed a victory over GW was in 2019 in Bender.
  • Last season, GW took a 10-point, 59-69, victory across town in the Charles E. Smith Center. Ivy Bales had nine points on four-for-four shooting, including a triple. She filled her stat line with four steals, three assists, and two steals.
  • The Revolutionaries had four players score in double-digits in that November matchup and shot 42 percent from the floor as opposed to American's 38 percent.
  • The teams were considerably equal in bench points, 12 for American and 13 for GW. The Revolutionaries had the slight advantage in points in the paint, 32-28, and scored 23 points to AU's 17 off turnovers.

  • American is still looking for its first win of the season after starting 0-8, including close losses against FDU at home, UMBC on the road, and Winthrop at El Clasico in Puerto Rico. Most recently, the squad is coming off a 62-89 loss on the road at Towson.
  • Freshman Molly Driscoll is coming off back-to-back hot performances versus Winthrop and Towson. Against the Eagles, Driscoll had a career night in points (24), rebounds (5), steals (3), and free throws (9). She went 9-for-9 from the charity stripe and went 5-for-9 from three. Against the Tigers, she was again the Eagles' top scorer, this time dropping 14 points.
  • Laura Nogues, junior point guard, has put together a string of solid performances as well. Against Winthrop, she has a season high 17 points, nine of which came from three pointers, and against Towson, she had 10 points, going 4-for-9 from the floor, including two triples.
  • Freshman forward Cecilia Kay leads the Eagles squad this season in points per game average (11.3), as well as rebounds per game (7.6) and blocks (15). She has also got five steals and seven assists.
  • Driscoll is second on the team in points per game average, with 8.9, and Anna Rescifina, a junior guard, is sitting on an average of 7.4 ppg while Nogues averages 7.1 ppg.
Scouting George Washington
  • The Revs will come into Bender Arena with a 5-4 record, most recently having dropped a game, 64-61, to Coppin State in overtime at home in Foggy Bottom on Tuesday night. It was their first overtime contest since March 2021.
  • Natalia Sierra-Vargas played the game of her GW career, serving a spark plug off the bench in a third-quarter rally after the Coppin State Eagles took a six-point lead midway through the stanza. Gabby Reynolds was also big in the comeback bid and went on to lead GW with 13 points.
  • The Revolutionaries struggled with perimeter shooting, going 3-for-17 for just 18 percent from beyond the arc while managing to shoot 42 percent from the floor overall.
  • GW has two players averaging over 10 points per game this season, with Makayla Andrews (13.0) and Gabby Reynolds (10.3). Reynolds also leads the team in steals (13) while Sara Lewis, who averages 7.8 ppg is leading the team with an average of 7.2 rebounds per game. Lewis' strength is on the defensive glass, where she tallies 61 of her 65 total rebounds.
  • With one conference game under their belts already, an 87-55 loss to George Mason back on December 3, the Revolutionaries have three non-conference games left before their conference season begins in swing. They'll play American, Miami (OH), and Hampton. Last season, the Revs went 6-12 in conference and 13-18 overall.
