Women’s Basketball Looks to Stay Perfect in the League Against Boston University

WASHINGTON – After opening the Patriot League season with two wins in a row over Lehigh and Bucknell, the American University basketball team will host Boston University on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 11:30 a.m. The Eagles and the Terriers are both 2-0 to begin conference play and looking to extend their win streaks.

INSIDE THE SERIES 
  • The Eagles and the Terriers have a series history that tips American's way with a 16-10 record.
  • In most recent years, Boston has a 3-2 lead in the series over American, including having swept the Eagles in the regular season in 2023. Away in Boston, the Terriers took a 73-63 victory, and a month later in February, grabbed a definitive 59-40 win in Bender Arena.
  • In game one, Emily Johns tallied 15 points to lead the charge for the Eagles while Ivy Bales also had an 11-point outing, going 5-11 from the field. She also took five steals and led, along with Lauren Stack with 6 rebounds.
  • The Terriers were led by Lauren Davenport and Maggie Pina with 16 and 15 points, respectively, in game one. Davenport also grabbed six rebounds. Caitlin Weimer led for BU on the glass with 10 rebounds.
  • In the second meeting of 2023, Laura Nogues finished the contest with a team-leading nine points. Following up was Anna LeMaster with eight points while Molly Lavin led for the Eagles on the boards with six. Lavin also recorded six points.
  • The Terriers were led by Sydney Johnson and Alex Giannaros with 16 and 12 points respectively. Maren Durant led for Boston U on the boards with nine total.
  • Johnson, Davenport, and Pina have since left BU's roster while Weimer and Giannaros remain. 
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN 
  • The Eagles have kicked off conference play by going 2-0 with wins over Lehigh away (68-65) and Bucknell at home (58-47). Against Bucknell, it was a dominant 13-2 run to open the third quarter that propelled AU to victory.
  • Ivy Bales seemingly did everything for the Eagles on both sides of the ball against the Bison. The guard led the team six steals while also recording 12 points, four assists, and seven rebounds. Her six steals were the most for any Eagle in a game this season. She also tied her career high from last season. Bales is sixth in the league in both assists (41) and steals (26).
  • On the glass, Molly Lavin led the team when she set her career high and a season high for the team with 12 rebounds. Lavin leads the team this season, averaging 5.3 rpg.
  • Graduate student Lauren Stack led American with 13 points on 6-8 shooting along with junior Bailey Garbee who also contributed 13 points of her own. It was a career-high for Garbee.
  • Point guard Laura Nogues led the Eagles with five assists. The sophomore had a stand-out performance against Lehigh as well, with 16 points, five rebounds, five steals, and three assists.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT BOSTON UNIVERSITY 
  • The Terriers will also be coming into Bender Arena on a 5 game win streak, including starting league play at 2-0. BU is 10-3 this season. Most recently, against Lafayette, Boston defeated the Leopards 62-55 on the road after topping Navy 62-51 at home in Case Gym.
  • In Easton, sophomore Anastasiia Semenova dropped a career-high 21 points, while senior Caitlin Weimar added a 19-point, 17-rebound double-double to help the Terriers grind to a victory.
  • Semenova nailed all three of her three-pointers while hitting 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. She also pulled down seven rebounds. In addition to her double-double, Weimar helped draw 13 fouls to make nine free throws.
  • Junior Giannaros and senior Kelsi Mingo added nine and eight points, respectively. Giannaros leads the team with 27 steals so far across 13 games; she is also second on the team with 37 assists.
  • On the season, Weimer is leading the Terriers both offensively and defensively. The senior is averaging 18.6 ppg along with 10.8 rpg. She also tops the team with 20 blocks.
