PHILADELPHIA - The opening day of the 119th EIWA Championships had its highs and lows for American University wrestling, but the Eagles will now rally behind their team members named Jack as both sophomore
Jack Maida and redshirt sophomore
Jack Nies will compete on the second and final day. Both are now assured of a top-eight finish in their respective weight classes, with Maida at 133 and Nies at 157.
Notable
- Maida will make his second appearance on day two in as many tries after doing the same last season and finishing fourth overall. Nies advances for the first time after falling short in his first attempt a year ago.
- The day began with a win for senior Patrick Ryan, who was AU's only wrestler to start out in the round of 32. He was up 3-0 on Hofstra's Michael Leandrou before taking the bout by injury default.
- From there, all 10 Eagles suffered losses in a tough round of 16, sending all 10 to the consolation bracket.
- Caleb Campos had the closest loss in the round of 16, falling to Army's Dalton Harkins by a score of 5-4 after beating Harkins 4-3 in early December.
- The second round started strong with the 12th pin of the season for Maximilian Leete, who took down Bucknell's Grayson McLellan in 4:49 to advance to the final bout of the day. Leete had three takedowns and a 7-1 lead at the time of his pin, which came late in the second period.
- The win for Leete started a string of six straight victories for the Eagles which included an overtime victory for Maida at 133, another pin at 141 for Raymond Lopez, a 3-1 decision for Ryan at 149, an 8-2 victory for Nies at 157 and a dominant, 13-2 major decision for Campos at 165.
- Lopez already had a 16-4 lead on Franklin & Marshall's Aidan O'Shea before winning by fall with 18 seconds remaining to finish it off.
- Maida went into sudden victory tied 1-1 with Hofstra's Chase Liardi before getting the takedown for a 3-1 win. It was the second close win over Liardi this season after a 2-0 decision for Maida at Hofstra in late December.
- Connor Bourne (197) and Will Jarrell (285) were the seventh and eighth Eagles to win in that first consolation round, with Bourne going 5-3 and Jarrell getting an 11-2 major decision.
- The second run the consolation bracket was not as fortuitous for American, with only Maida and Nies coming out on top.
- Maida, the No. 12 seed, closed out his day with a 5-1 victory over the No. 10 seed Rich Treanor of Army, getting two takedowns and an escape.
- Nies also took out a higher seed but it was one he had also defeated earlier in the season. Nies, at No. 9, earned a 5-4 win over No. 7 Nick Palumbo of Sacred Heart.
