Women’s Lacrosse to Set to Host Lafayette Saturday in Patriot League Opener

WASHINGTON – American University women's lacrosse (4-3, 0-0 PL) is coming home to Jacobs on Saturday, March 18 off a high of winning against the University of California to face off with Patriot League opponents, Lafayette (1-18, 0-1 PL). The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
  • In the last five games against each other, Lafayette leads 3-2, but overall American has the 12-8 leg up over the Leopards in the program series. The Eagles can also claim the 5-3 home field advantage when playing at Jacobs Complex.
  • The last time the two teams met, March 19, 2022, the Eagles were away in Easton, Pa. and claimed the 13-9 victory over the Leopards.
  • Before their win in 2022, the Eagles had lost three straight contests to Lafayette, not winning against the Leopards in.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • Hot off a close, 11-10, win against Power Five opponent California this past Sunday, the Eagles are firing on all cylinders coming into conference play against Lafayette.
  • Sophomore Maddy Spratt, who leads the team with 17 goals and seven assists so far this season, scored two of the goals against the Bears. She also had five draw controls, a ground ball, and an assist.
  • In the game against California, junior midfielder Hannah Spease and sophomore attacker Alyssa Apuzzo each came out with a hat trick. Spease's three goals came as a result of five shots. She also topped the Eagles for the afternoon with seven draw controls. Her goal with 1:41 left to play was the game winner, helped by Sadie Herman on defense who caused a turnover and then got the ground ball to hold possession that would ensure the win.
  • Spease is also fifth in the league with 40 overall draw controls (6.00 per game).
  • Kellie Linehan, a freshman midfielder, also picked up two goals against the Bears. On the season, Linehan is third on the team in goals (14), and second in assists (6).
  • Grace Brennan, a senior defender, leads the team in caused turnovers with seven, and is second on the team with 10 ground balls picked up, holding as a defensive strong point on the Eagles defensive line.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT LAFAYETTE
  • Katie Chiasson scored the lone goal in the Lafayette women's lacrosse defeat at Villanova, 15-1, on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. Villanova earned a 13-0 streak until Chiasson put the Maroon and White on the board at 7:05 in the fourth quarter. The Pelham, N.H. native was assisted by Meghan McLachlan.
  • The Leopards are 1-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play after taking on Lehigh last Saturday for their league opener, falling 3-15 to the Mountain Hawks.
  • Chiasson leads the team in goals on the year with 14 and has two assists as well. She also has 12 draw controls to her line on the stat sheet. Sara Rogers, a sophomore attacker for the Leopards, is close behind with 13 goals and has six assists. Rogers also has 10 ground balls.
  • Sara Bennett and Abby Romano have also both reached double-digit scoring for the Leopards with 11 and 10 respectively. Romano also has 14 draw controls.
  • In draw controls, Lafayette is led by sophomore defender Lyndsay Geiger who's tallied 35 in the opening half of the season. She's followed by freshman Katie Marrs who has 20.
