Women’s Lacrosse to Host Crosstown Competitors George Washington in Mid-Week Clash

WASHINGTON – The American University women's lacrosse team (2-1) is on a two win-streak and playing their second of three home games in a row on Wednesday, March 1 at 1 pm in Jacobs Complex, when they will face-off against the Colonials of George Washington University (0-3).

SERIES HISTORY
  • George Washington and American have only taken the field against each other eight times in program history, with the Colonials leading the way with 5 wins to the Eagles' three. At home in Jacobs Complex, the two programs are knotted 2-2 with an even series.
  • The last time the two teams met, March 2, 2022, it was at George Washington and the Colonials were the victor with a score of 9-11.
  • American hasn't won against George Washington since Feb. 26, 2020, when the final score was 20-16 to the Eagles. Since then, the teams competed twice, the Eagles dropping both contests.  
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • The Eagles are coming into this Wednesday's game off a 15-2 big second win over Howard on Friday–an impressivestart to their early season over a prominent cross-town rival. American is 2-1 going into their game against GW.
  • Sophomore Maddy Spratt led the charge with three goals and an assist. All four of her shots were on goal. Additionally, she contributed to her team with a ground ball.
  • The freshmen trio of Annabelle Jackson, Kellie Linehan, and Reagan Murdoch made their presence known for the Eagles. Jackson kept up her hot start to the season with her sixth and seventh goals on four shots. Linehan scored with her lone shot of the game while recording an assist. Murdoch also scored on three shots.
  • Sophomore twins, Jaime Petronis and Kate Petronis, along with juniors Hannah Spease and Lizzie De Guzman, scored a goal each. Seniors, Sadie Herman and Sydney Wender also scored their first goals of the season.
  • Senior, Emma Hare, sophomores, Ashley Smith and Alyssa Apuzzo, and freshman, Rachel Kolton, all added an assist in the home opener.
  • junior Goalkeeper Mary Alice Collins wasn't forced into many tense scenarios but made two saves and only allowed one goal. Sophomore, Lexi Rakis, joined the game in the second half and added three more saves while allowing only one of their opponents two goals.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON
  • The Colonials are 0-3 to start the season coming into Jacobs on Wednesday after losses to UMBC, Temple, and most recently are fresh off a 7-12 loss to Stetson on Friday, Feb. 24.
  • Sophomore Hayley Bolton came alive in her second appearance of the season, scoring three-goals for her first-ever hat trick. She scored the Colonials' first and only goal of the first period and found the net again once in the third and once more in the fourth quarter.
  • In the second, third, and fourth quarters the Colonials scored two goals in each. Two goals came from midfielder Kerry McKeever. McKeever had an assist and a goal in the second frame and scored again in the third. The graduate student also had six draw controls for the contest.
  • Along with fellow graduate student, Whitney Moran, McKeever leads the team with five goals. Moran leads George Washington with 10 draw controls for the season. And McKeever has nine total across three games.
  • Freshman midfielder Stella Ray is the leader of the Colonials' ground ball campaign, with 17 to her name. She also leads the team in caused turnovers with six.
  • George Washington is second in the Atlantic-10 conference in saves per game, averaging 11.22 thanks to Megan Patrick, who's fourth in the league in save percentage (.479), and second in saves per game (11.24).
