Women’s Lacrosse Set to Face Howard in Home Opener

WASHINGTON – The American University women's lacrosse team (1-1) is kicking off a three-game homestead on Friday afternoon when they take on Howard on Feb. 24 at noon in Jacobs Complex. The Eagles are coming into 2023 after one of the best seasons in recent history, going 9-9 and making a berth in the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2013 and they are looking to keep that momentum of success going.

  • This will be the first time since 2019 that the matchup will be held at Jacobs Complex.
  • The last time the two teams faced off was February of 2022, at Howard where the Eagles dominated the Bison in a 16-3 performance.
SCOUTING AMERICAN
  • The Eagles are coming into this Friday's game off a 15-14 last second win over UMBC on Saturday–their first win over the Retrievers in over 20 years. American is 1-1 to start the season.
  • It was Annabelle Jackson with a free position goal in the final second of the contest that had the Eagles soaring to their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore.
  • The freshmen power combo Kellie Linehan and Jackson led for the Eagles with four goals on seven shots apiece. All four of Jackson's shots on target ended up as goals while Linehan also had two assists.
  • Junior transfer, defender Hannah Spease had a hat trick of her own from five shots on goal. She also picked up two ground balls and an assist. Spease had the first goal of the contest less than a minute in, kick starting the back and forth that would ensue for the next fou periods. Both Spease and fellow classmate Lizzie De Guzman led the way for American with four draw controls each.
  • Maddy Spratt had two goals and an assist, and Reagan Murdoch and Emma Hare joined in with a goal each while keeper Mary Alice Collins had 11 saves on the afternoon against the 25 shots the Retrievers put on goal.
SCOUTING HOWARD
  • The Bison are coming into Jacobs Complex having started the season off 0-2 with losses to Delaware State and most recently to Akron, dropping 4-20 to the Zips on Friday, Feb. 17.
  • Akron outscored the Howard University women's lacrosse team after intermission, 11-1, to spoil the Bison's home opener at Greene Stadium. In that game, freshman Berkeley Clayborne led the Bison attack with three goals from five shots and a draw control.
  • Quai Skeete-Ridley had two assists, three ground balls, and two forced turnovers. In the fourth period, senior attacker Heidi Chicas earned an assist when she found Clayborne for her third goal of the day to end the scoring drought the Bison found themselves in in the second half.
  • Fifth year defender Andrea Fievre aided the campaign with three ground balls and two caused turnovers for the afternoon while senior midfielder Madison Joines and Jada Auletta recorded two more shots on target for Howard.
  • Junior defender Taylor Worsham picked up three more ground balls for the Bison and added a forced turnover to her line on the stat sheet.
