Women’s Basketball Will Face Crosstown Rivals George Washington on Wednesday

WASHINGTON –  The American University women's basketball team will face a familiar opponent in a midweek clash in downtown D.C. After a tough trip to Philadelphia over the weekend, the Eagles aim to get back on track closer to home, taking on George Washington on Wednesday, Nov. 15 with a scheduled tip off at 6 p.m.

INSIDE THE SERIES 

  • This will be the 31st meeting between the two teams. The Revolutionaries lead American 18-12 in the all-time series. In the last five meetings, they lead the Eagles 3-2. 
  • In Smith Arena, George Washington holds a 12-4 home-court advantage over American. 
  • The last time the two programs faced off, George Washington came away with the five-point (62-67) win over the Eagles in Bender Arena on Nov. 17, 2022.  
  • All five AU starters from the contest last season return, four of which have started both games so far this season. The leading scorers were Lauren Stack (13), Emily Johns (12), and Kayla Henning (11). The Eagles were led in rebounding by Ivy Bales with eight. 
  • The Revolutionaries earned their edge by gaining advantages in points in the paint (32-24) in in points off turnovers (18-8). 

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN 

  • The Eagles look to bounce back after a weekend loss to La Salle in Philadelphia. Dropping the game 53-62, American looks to get back on the winning track against hometown rival George Washington. 
  • Senior Emily Johns continues to be a bright spot for the Eagles so far this season. Averaging 17 points per game, the forward will be an essential piece to breaking down the Colonials on Wednesday. 
  • Graduate student Lauren Stack remains the essential piece for American she has been throughout her career for the Eagles, scoring 16 points against La Salle over the weekend and grabbing seven boards. 
  • Sophomore Molly Lavin continues to produce for the Eagles this season, providing a great spark for American off the bench. Lavin scored 15 points for American in the season opener against Longwood and snagged six rebounds last weekend at La Salle. 
  • The Eagles will look to bring back their success from behind the arc against GW, going 2-19 from three against La Salle after sinking 11 triples against Longwood in the season opener. 

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON 

  • The Colonials look to remain perfect in their match-up against the Eagles on Wednesday, defeating Howard at home in their season opener and taking it to Manhattan on the road over the weekend. 
  • Graduate student Madison Buford provided the Colonials the spark to surpass Manhattan over the weekend, posting 20 points after going 7-8 from the floor, 2-2 from three, and shooting a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. 
  • For the underclassmen, sophomore Nya Robertson stays hot for the Colonials, scoring 29 against Howard and 10 against Manhattan since the start of the season. 
  • The Revolutionaries have won both of their games this season by a margin of six points, but never once trailed against Howard after outscoring the Bison 42-8 in the first period of the game. 
  • Against Manhattan, GW had a resurgent third period where they topped the Jaspers 18-7 despite being down by eight points at halftime.
