Megan Gebbia Named Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Wake Forest

WASHINGTON – After a historic nine seasons at American University, Megan Gebbia has been hired as the new head women's basketball coach at Wake Forest University.

The program leader in all-time wins with an overall record of 160-106 (.602), Gebbia has served as the Eagles' head coach since 2013 and led the team to three Patriot League titles, three NCAA Tournament berths, and two WNIT appearances.

"We thank Megan for all her service and tremendous success during her time as our head women's basketball coach," said Director of Athletics & Recreation Dr. Billy Walker. "Beyond the win percentage and league titles, it is her character and tremendous mentorship of our student-athletes that have left an indelible mark on our program. We are thankful for her leadership in making this a benchmark program in the Patriot League and know that the hard work of our returning student-athletes will carry that forward. We wish Megan nothing but the best as she moves on to another chapter of what is already an incredible coaching career."

"American will always hold a special place in my heart – it is where I got my start as an assistant coach over 25 years ago, and it has been my home these last nine years. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Walker and President Burwell for their unwavering support and trust," Gebbia said. "I have had the honor and privilege to work with an incredible group of young women, and the hard work and dedication to both their craft and education as student-athletes has been nothing short of inspiring. We have built a championship program here at American University, and I cannot wait to see that tradition continued in the years to come.

"What I will take and cherish the most, though, are the relationships I have formed over the last nine years. Thank you to the coaches and staff for your commitment to this program and our players – without the dedication and passion of so many, our success would not have been possible. Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle."

The most successful coach in program history, Gebbia's impact runs much deeper than records and championships. The two-time Patriot League Coach of the Year mentored some of the most successful student-athletes to ever wear the red, white, and blue, including five Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year, four Patriot League Players of the Year, three CoSIDA Academic All-District selections, and one CoSIDA Academic All-American and Division I-AAA ADA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Her players have also garnered 27 All-Patriot League awards and nine All-Academic honors.

Under Gebbia and her staff, the Eagles had their two most successful seasons in program history, first in 2015 when they went 24-9, including a 16-2 run through the Patriot League, en route to the program's first conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance. It was a similar story in 2018 as the team went 26-7 overall, 16-2 in league play, to claim the PL title once again and advance into the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

American is coming off its third NCAA appearance under Gebbia in 2022 after a 23-9 season which included her record-breaking 151st win on February 9 against Bucknell.

American University will conduct a national search for its next women's basketball coach.
