WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team will return home one last time on Saturday for the Eagles' Senior Day celebration, hosting Colgate at noon at Jacobs Complex.
SENIOR DAY
- Prior to Saturday's game, the Eagles will celebrate the 12 members of the team's stellar senior class. This group, which saw two shortened seasons due to COVID-19, accrued 26 wins over the last few years, including a historic 7-0 run during the 2020 nonconference before the season was cut short.
- Now, the class of 2022 will look to continue making history as they enter the final stretch of the regular season with one of the winningest records in recent years at 8-6 overall. With three games left in the regular season, they are three wins away from tying the program record for single-season wins (11 - 2003), and are in the running for the program's first Patriot League Tournament appearance since 2013.
- Fourth-year seniors: Ashley Go (communication), Haley Harkins (neuroscience), Sophie Ossip (political science), Katie Pierce (public relations & strategic communication), Jennifer Schaen (health promotion), Morgan Schaen (health promotion), Hali Sibilia (business administration), and Stefanie Walsh (political science, and justice & law).
- Fifth-year seniors: Sarah Boney (master's in health promotion), Kendall Goldblum (master's in marketing), Cate Golden (master's in marketing), and Emma Vinall (master's in marketing).
NATIONAL GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY
- Saturday will double as the return of AU's annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) celebration.
- Following the conclusion of Saturday's game, seven of American's varsity women's teams - basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving and volleyball, along with the cheer and dance squads - will lead skills clinics and sign autographs for kids of all ages in attendance.
- The clinic is free for all, and children are asked to wear athletic shoes and gear.
- Click here for more information and to register your child(ren) in advance for the free NGWSD event.
SERIES HISTORY
- Colgate comes into the game on a five-game win streak against the Eagles to pick up a 16-7 lead in the series that dates back to 1993.
- American's last win over the Raiders was a 10-9 final in Washington, D.C., during the 2014 season.Â
- This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2019 when Colgate took the 13-11 victory at Jacobs Complex.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- Despite some career-high performances from the Eagles' underclassmen, American couldn't quite keep pace with #24 Navy on Wednesday and fell to the Mids, 16-10, in Annapolis.
- Freshman Alyssa Apuzzo led the squad for the second time this season with a career-high four goals, followed by classmate Becca Frank who also picked up a new career-high with her first hat trick.
- Sophomore Jordan Mitchell had a solid performance on the defensive end with four draw controls, three caused turnovers, and two grounds balls - all good for new career-highs.
- Fifth-year senior Emma Vinall continues to lead the overall offensive effort for the Eagles with 47 points (38g, 9a). The program record holder in points, goals, and draw controls scored her 200th goal earlier in the month - the first Eagle to ever reach that milestone, and the 10th player in Patriot League history. She currently ranks 7th among active DI players for career goals per game (3.42), and is 16th for career points per game (4.0).
- Senior Stefanie Walsh sits alongside Vinall with a career-high 47 points on the year (32g, 15a). One of the top midfielders in the Patriot League, she is second in the conference with 20 caused turnovers.
- Vinall also leads the team in the draw circle with 97 draw controls on the season followed by 45 from classmate Kendall Goldblum, who also ranks third on the squad with 46 points (35g, 11a).
- The trio of freshmen - Spratt, Apuzzo, and Frank - round out the top-six scorers on the squad.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Alice Collins continues to lead the team from the net. She was back in double-figures in the last two games with 11 saves each after only picking up two against Loyola Maryland on April 13. Prior to that, she was on a tear with a 16.5 saves per game average over a four-game stretch, including a pair of career-highs against Old Dominion (16) and Army West Point (20). She comes into the weekend with 111 saves on the season, and a 12.93 goals against average.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
- Colgate is coming into the weekend of its first pair of consecutive wins after edging out Lafayette, 13-12, and Holy Cross, 16-15, at home.
- Wednesday's overtime victory over Holy Cross was a back-and-forth battle with seven lead changes over the 62 minutes of play.
- Three Raiders closed with hat tricks, starting with Cara O'Reilly's five goals. Devon Mailett added four, including the game-tying goal in the final four minutes of regulation.
- Lucy Licata scored three, including the game-winner with 1:57 left in the first and only period of extra time.
- Olivia Lynch made only her second start of the season in goal. She came away with a dozen saves on the day.
- Colgate leads the Patriot League with 17.3 draw controls per game and is second with 10.4 saves per game.
- Kyra Lucey continues to lead the team with 37 points (20g, 17a) despite being held to only two goals on Wednesday.
- On the defensive end, Mia Hartung paces Colgate with 20 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.
- Cara O'Reilly also leads with 20 ground balls alongside her team-high 98 draw controls.
- Amelia Cunningham has led in goal for most of the season and has 63 saves in her 10 games (14.44 GAA).
