Women’s Basketball Heads to Delaware on Wednesday

WASHINGTON – The American University women's basketball team (1-9) will be traveling to take on Delaware (6-4) in their final non-conference game of the season. The Eagles are coming off their first win after defeating UMBC 70-68 while the Blue Hens stopped a two-game losing streak in its tracks by downing the Patriot League's Lehigh on Sunday.

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • Delaware leads the series against American 13-5, including the last five meetings that date between 2017 and 2000.
  • The last time the Eagles and the Blue Hens met in contest was in 2017 when Delaware took the home court advantage and claimed the 56-72 victory.
  • This meeting will be Delaware's fifth home game of the season; statistically this season they've gone 2-2 at home. Last year, the Blue Hens were 9-2 at home.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • Emily Johns leads the team in points this season. The junior is averaging 14.9 ppg, going 11-21 from the floor and grabbed a career-high 25 points in the Eagles' weekend clash against UMBC. She also had seven rebounds, to assists, and a steal.
  • Junior guards Ivy Bales and Riley DeRubbo are cementing themselves both offensively and defensively as pre-season inches to its close. Both had career points highs against UMBC with Bales sinking 14 points and DeRubbo 18. On top of six assists, DeRubbo also had three steals and five rebounds while Bales had two steals and four rebounds.
  • On the glass against UMBC, American was led by junior guard Kayla Henning. The junior collected nine rebounds and a steal. Henning is also averaging 7.6 ppg.
  • The Eagles have played two ranked opponents this season in No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 25 Villanova. This is the first time American has played a ranked opponent in regular season play since No. 8 Stanford in the 2018-19 season.
  • One Eagle to keep an eye on off the bench is guard Sadie Stetson. Averaging 13.2 minutes per game, the senior guard has been critical to the Eagles defense while recording seven steals and a block on the season, on top of six assists.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT DELAWARE
  • At the helm for the Blue Hens is newly minted head coach, Sarah Jenkins. Jenkins was named the program's fifth head coach in April after having been the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator throughout the 2020-21 season. Before that, she spent four years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
  • The Blue Hens hold onto a 6-4 record and are coming off a win after defeating the Patriot League's Lehigh 79-67 after trailing by seven at the half.
  • Delaware is led in scoring so far this season by Klarke Sconiers; the senior center is averaging 11.8 points per outing so far with a .529 field goal percentage. In the game against Lehigh, she had a career-best 29 points while going 10-12 from the field and grabbing 11 boards.
  • Makayla Pippin is topping the Blue Hens on the boards, averaging 9.8 per game while also raking in 10.9 ppg–the second highest on the squad.
  • From beyond the arc, Delaware's biggest threat is Jewel Smalls. Smalls has already made 27 threes, averaging .403 percent. The fifth-year guard also has 15 steals and is third on the team with 9.9 ppg.
