Women’s Basketball to Take on #7 Notre Dame and Arizona State in the Bahamas

WASHINGTON – It's going to be a tropical Thanksgiving for the American University women's basketball team as they travel down to the Bahamas to partake in the 2022 Goombay Splash. The Eagles (0-3) will face #7 Notre Dame (4-0) in their opening game on November 24. The loser of that game will play Arizona State (4-0) on Nov. 25, while the winner will take on the Sun Devils on Nov. 26.

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • This will be the first meeting between American and Notre Dame. The matchup means that American will face off against its second ACC opponent in two games after having taken on Virginia at home.
  • American has faced Arizona State once before in program history, falling 90-82 in Tempe during the 1996-97 season.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • American is still on the hunt for its first win of the season. The Eagles are 0-3 after dropping on the road to DePaul and at home to crosstown rivals and the ACC's Virginia. Facing off against #7 Notre Dame might prove a challenge, but the Eagles aren't backing down.
  • Kayla Henning shot 8-11 from the field against Virginia, adding two from the line to grab a career-high 18 points.
  • Forward Emily Johns was the second highest points getter for the third game in a row with 14 while also leading the squad with nine rebounds against Virginia.
  • Classmate and fellow guard Riley DeRubbo shot 3-6 in the game, going 2-4 from beyond the arc, and scoring eight points. She also had two rebounds.
  • Senior forward Lauren Stack got into foul trouble in the fourth quarter but had the second highest count on the team for rebounds with four, also grabbing three assists, and two steals.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NOTRE DAME
  • The Fighting Irish finished 24-9 last season and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 and have started the 22-23 season with a perfect 4-0 record.
  • In their most recent game against Ball State, Notre Dame had six players with 10+ points, one of which was graduate student Dara Mabrey who went 5-10 from beyond the arc.
  • The leading scorer for Notre Dame so far this season is Olivia Miles. Averaging 16 ppg and 7.0 rpg, the sophomore is a 92% free throw shooter and is playing an average of 28 minutes per game.
  • The Fighting Irish also have 2022 McDonald's All-American KK Bransford. The sole freshman on the roster is averaging 7.0 ppg and 3.5 rpg. Against Ball State the rookie went 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
  • Also playing hot for Notre Dame is the 2022 ACC Rookie of the Year, Sonia Citron. The sophomore is averaging 15 ppg and 8 rpg. She's also an 85% free throw shooter.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT ARIZONA STATE
  • Heading into the Goombay Splash, the Sun Devils are a perfect 4-0 so far this season.
  • ASU is under the leaderships of a new head coach, Natasha Adair. Adair brings her talents to ASU after five seasons at Delaware, where she compiled a 95-58 record, including two back-to-back 20-win seasons, and captured the program's third CAA title. In 2021-22, she coached the Blue Hens to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in nearly a decade.
  • After rallying in the final three minutes against New Mexico to win 83-77 in overtime, ASU are undefeated in their first four since the shortened 2020-21 season.
  • The Sun Devils' leading scorer so far this season is junior Tyi Skinner, who's averaging 19 ppg and shooting 82% from the line. They've also got junior Treasure Hunt who averages 13.5 ppg and 10.3 rpg.
