Women’s Basketball Welcomes Virginia to Bender on Sunday

WASHINGTON – The American University women's basketball team (0-2) is on the hunt for its first win of the season and are hoping to pick it up when against Virginia (4-0) in Bender Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Eagles are looking for a repeat of last season where they defeated the Cavaliers away in Charlottesville; however, Virginia has a been on the bounce since the hiring of new head coach, Amaka "Mox" Agugua-Hamilton and is looking to protect the perfect start to their season.

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • This will be the 3rd meeting between the two programs. The series dates to just 2018. Both contests prior have been played in Charlottesville.
  • While Virginia won the first meeting in 2018 with a final score of 57-54, American won the most recent meeting between the two programs in 2021 by a score of 69-56.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • First year head coach Tiffany Coll is at the helm after being with the team for nine years. Her first five years with AU were as an assistant coach before she transitioned to associate head coach for the previous four years. Coll has built a fresh new coaching staff that's eager to build on the success of seasons prior.
  • American enters Sunday's game in search of its first win of the season. The Eagles dropped their first two games against DePaul and George Washington.
  • Stack, on top of scoring 13 points, went 5-7 from the free throw line against GW and had three rebounds and two assists. Stack and Johns, who had 12 points, both had one steal apiece in the matchup for the Eagles.
  • Freshman forward Molly Lavin, who led AU with 15 points at DePaul, went 3-3 from long range against GW and finished the night with nine points.
  • Junior Ivy Bales led the Eagles on the boards with eight rebounds vs. GW. She also earned four assists while classmate Kayla Henning shot 5-6 from the field, scoring 11 points and taking down four rebounds.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT VIRGINIA
  • This will be the Cavaliers' fifth game of the season, after starting their 2022-23 campaign off at 4-0.
  • After finishing the 2021-22 season with a record of 5-22, UVA looks to be bouncing back under new head coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton.
  • Previously, Agugua-Hamilton coached at Missouri State, leading the Lady Bears to a 74-15 record over three years and playing in the last two NCAA Tournaments (Sweet 16 appearance in 2021).
  • Virginia returned four of its five starters from last season and the first two players off the bench from the 2021-22 campaign.
  • After rallying back from a first-half deficit at Loyola Chicago, Virginia started their season 4-0 for the first time since 2016-17.
  • The Cavaliers' leading scorer from last year, Camryn Taylor, leads the team again in points (16.7 per game) and rebounds (7.7 per game) at the start of the 2022-23 season.
