THE BRONX, N.Y. – On Friday, the American University cross country team traveled to the Big Apple to compete in the historic 113th Annual IC4A and 39th ECAC cross country championship held in Van Cortlandt Park. The team will have a bye-week before heading to the Patriot League Championships at the end of October.
WOMEN
- The women took on their standard 6000-m distance for the third time this season and had one member of the team, freshman Annie Ripol, set a new PR.
- Junior June Mwaniki again set the pace for the Eagles, leading the charge for the group for the seventh time in her career to finish first for AU, and 36th overall, with a time of 22:15.0.
- Senior Rachael Potter was the second-place finisher for the Eagles, crossing the line in 23:24.8.
- Coming in third for AU was junior Callia Cordasco with a time of 23:30.2. She was followed just nine seconds later by freshman Sophia Staiger at 23:39.2, senior Nia Holden ten seconds later at 23:40.9, and thirteen second later by Ripol who's time of 23:43.6 is a collegiate personal best for her.
MEN
- For the second time this season the men ran 8000-m, and senior standout Russell Sullivan paced the group of Eagles.
- Sullivan crossed the line 60th overall with a time of 25:27.6 and led the AU team for the 14th time in their career.
- Freshman Kaden Kluth was the second-place finisher for the Eagles, timing out at 25:38.9, just 11 seconds behind Sullivan.
- Only 28 seconds after Sullivan crossed the line, third place finisher for the Eagles, senior Tucker Zullo finished, coming in at 25:55.7, which is his quickest 8k finish since 2019 and highest place finish amongst the AU group this season.
- Finishers four through seven for the Eagles all crossed the line within four seconds, starting just 11 seconds after Zullo finished. In order those finishers were sophomore Oscar Counsell (26:06.2), junior Ethan Puc (26:08.5), senior Nathan Reeves (26:09.1), and sophomore Alex Murphy (26:10.5).
