Men’s Soccer Hosts Navy with Division Title on the Line

WASHINGTON – American University men's soccer will host Navy on Saturday afternoon with Patriot League tournament seeding on the line.

QUICK INFO
  • Date/Time: Saturday, April 10, 3:00 p.m.
  • Site: Washington, D.C. (Reeves Field)
  • Series History: AU leads, 13-11-8
  • TV: ESPN+
  • Talent: Ryan Piers
WHAT'S AT STAKE
  • A win by AU tomorrow will clinch the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League South and a home game in the Patriot League semifinals.
  • A draw will also clinch a spot in the semifinals with AU's seed depending on the results of Bucknell-Loyola at 7 p.m. on Saturday. In this scenario, a Bucknell victory or tie would clinch the No. 1 seed for AU, while a Loyola victory would push AU to the No. 2 seed.
  • If AU loses, they will be eliminated from postseason contention.
  • A win or draw would put AU back in the Patriot League Tournament after narrowly missing out a season ago. The Eagles last made the tournament in 2018 as a No. 6 seed, falling 3-2 in overtime to Colgate.

  • Schedules and game updates can be found at www.AUeagles.com and our Twitter account @AUeagles.
  • All scheduled events and start times are subject to change.
INSIDE THE SERIES
  • Navy only outshot American, 6-5, in their last meeting, but made the shots count in a 4-0 victory at Reeves Field on Oct. 2, 2019.
  • The two programs have met 32 times with 11 meetings requiring overtime.
  • The winner of today's contest is guaranteed a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. A loss or draw by either side could result in tiebreakers being used to determine spots in the four-team tournament depending on other results within the division.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • AU played Loyola to a 1-1 draw last Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field. David Coly scored his second goal of the season with Kevin Ventura recording the first assist of his career.
  • The Eagles opened Patriot League play with a 2-1 mark, AU's best three-game start in conference since 2016. That year's team ended up going 7-1-1 in PL play en route to the regular-season title. AU is currently tied for first in the PL South Division with Loyola and Navy.
  • AU earned the 500th win in men's soccer history with a win three weeks ago at Loyola. The program began in 1949 and is in the 72nd season of existence.
  • Defensively, American rides a two-goalkeeper rotation. Senior Jake Agnew starts the first half, while freshman Lorenzo Gordon finishes the game. The Eagles hold a 0.93  goals against average (GAA), good for second in the Patriot League. Agnew was named PL Goalkeeper of the Week on March 23 after recording three saves on 13 shots faced at Loyola (3/20). Gordon ranks second in the league with a 0.44 GAA.
  • Offensively, the AU attack is led by David Coly, Kyle Hellmann, and Jason Bouregy. The Eagles are one of three PL programs with two multi-goal scorers this season, joing Boston University and Lafayette. Coly and Hellmann have both scored two goals, while Bouregy has a goal and an assist so far this season.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NAVY
  • Navy is coming off a 2-0 loss at home to Loyola on Wednesday night, the Mids' first loss of the season. A win would have clinched a spot in the PL Tournament.
  • David Jackson has paced Navy this spring with two goals and two assists. Jackson's six points on the year not only lead the Midshipmen but are tied for second in the Patriot League. Both of his tallies have been game-winning goals.
  • Ian Bramblett has played all 450 minutes in net this season, picking up a league-best two shutouts while holding a 0.80 GAA.
  • After playing Colgate at the end of February, the Mids were forced into a 27-day layoff in between games due to the restriction of movement affecting the entire Naval Academy.
  • In the last batch of rankings from the United Soccer Coaches Association, Navy was ranked No. 6 in the Atlantic region. The Midshipmen also climbed in to the top-30 of the College Soccer News national ranking.
PURSUIT OF ANTI-RACISM WEEKEND
  • Over 4,000 warm-up shirts will be worn during pre-game activities by more than 100 teams, including student-athletes, coaches and staff, to show their widespread support of the Patriot League's Black and Brown communities through unity, respect and activism.
  • The design was a collaborative effort that originated with Lehigh women's basketball student-athletes Mary Clougherty and Katie Rice, and Bucknell women's basketball student-athlete Abby Kapp on behalf of the Patriot League Basketball Social Justice Coalition, a group comprised of Patriot League men's and women's basketball student-athletes.
  • The student-athletes worked with League office staff members and the Patriot League Anti-Racism Commission to design the logo and the warm-up shirts that will be worn before contests on April 9 through 11.
  • The Patriot League joins Division I conferences like the America East, Big East, Ivy League and more in showing its commitment to stand with the Black and Brown communities by incorporating the "Black Fist" mark. The stars on the border of the logo represent the Patriot League's 10 full-time member institutions.
AWARDS SEASON
  • American has earned Patriot League Men's Soccer weekly awards on two different occasions this season. After the double-overtime win over Loyola, Jason Bouregy (Rookie) and Jake Agnew (Goalkeeper) were honored by the league.
  • Additionally, AU picked up four weekly awards after topping Lehigh in the season-opener. All four players (Bouregy, Blassou, Gordon, Matei) honored by the league were playing the first games in their AU career.
  • That recognition marked the first time since Oct. 22, 2018 that an AU Men's Soccer player was a recipient of a PL weekly award.
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
  • With its remarkable location in Washington, D.C., American has long attracted students from all around the globe. The men's soccer program is no different.
  • AU boasts a roster featuring eight international players from six different countries.
  • England leads the way with three players calling it home (Dimitrijevic, McConnell, McGovern).
  • Other countries represented on the AU roster include Bulgaria (Poelzlbauer), Cameroon (Zouantcha), Turkey (Bouregy), Senegal (Coly), and Sweden (Sjoberg). Additionally, Al-Ameen Salako was born in Nigeria, but calls Wilmette, Ill., home.
STAYING LOCAL
  • As global of a footprint that AU Men's Soccer has produced, local roots to soccer clubs in the DMV region also run deep.
  • Five players from the Bethesda-Rockville area have made the short trek up the road to be an Eagle. Nicolas Blassou and Ben Severe both transferred to AU to be closer to home after beginning their careers at Kentucky and Villanova, respectively. Will ManogueKevin Ventura, and Tomas Martini join those two as Maryland natives on the roster.
  • Lorenzo Gordon is also not very far from his hometown of Fairfax, Va. Gordon is the only Virginia native on the squad this season.
THE AMERICAN 500
  • With the win over Loyola three weeks ago, American men's soccer reached 500 wins in program history.
  • The program was established in 1949 and is competing in its 72nd season.
  • The Patriot League boasts a rich men's soccer tradition, as eight other programs have also reached 500 wins.
  • Of programs established after the 1930s, AU is one of three to reach the milestone (Boston U. - 1949, 560 wins, Loyola - 1940, 734 wins).
STACKING UP THE STATS
  • Lorenzo Gordon has really shined in the first few games of his AU career.
  • The rookie leads the league in save percentage (.875) and is second in the league with a 0.44 GAA, only allowing one goal in 205 minutes between the pipes.
  • AU is one of only three PL schools with two multi-goal scorers this season, joining Boston U. and Lafayette.
  • Kyle Hellmann and David Coly have both found the back of the net twice this season.
THE STORY ON SCHEDULING
  • A six-game Patriot League-only schedule is in place and set to begin in early March. The Eagles, like all fall sports in the Patriot League and in much of the nation, did not have competition in the fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • AU will compete in the Patriot League South Division along with Bucknell, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland, and Navy. The North Division features Army, Boston U., Holy Cross, Lafayette, and Colgate.
  • Four teams will qualify for the PL Tournament, with each division winner hosting the second-place team within its division in the semifinal round. The remaining team with the highest regular-season point total will host the championship game.
