Lacrosse Set to Visit Lehigh for 2021 Finale

Game 8  ·  American (1-6, 0-4 PL) at Lehigh (6-3, 5-1 PL)
Wednesday, April 28  ·  4 p.m.  ·  Bethlehem, Pa. (Ulrich Sports Complex)
All-Time Record: Tied, 11-11

WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team will take to the turf for one final game in 2021 on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. contest at Lehigh. The two teams were originally scheduled to meet on Saturday, April 24, but the game was postponed to give the Eagles one more Patriot League South Division game against Navy.

SERIES HISTORY
  • The Mountain Hawks tied the 22-game series against the Eagles earlier this season with a 12-10 win at Jacobs Complex on March 13.
  • Lehigh has claimed the last six games and hold a 6-3 edge over American on their home field.
  • AU's last win over the Mountain Hawks was in Bethlehem on April 7, 2013 (16-8).
RECORD BREAKER
  • Senior Emma Vinall has long been one of the best players to ever wear the red, white, and blue. That fact was solidified, though, on Saturday with a historic senior day performance that placed Vinall atop the career record board for both points and goals.
  • The Fairfax, Va., native entered the game tied with Eleni Vagelatos ('99) for the record in career points (179) but was six goals away from breaking Vagelatos' record of 160 career goals. Vinall wasted little time in surpassing Vagelatos in points, scoring a quick hat trick within the first 10 minutes of the game to land at 182 in her career.
  • The tough Navy defense limited her looks for the next 40 minutes, though, until with just over six minutes left on the clock, senior Casey Harkins found her with a quick give-and-go in front of goal for her fourth of the day. From there, it was a race against the clock as she found the back of the net once again off a free position opportunity with 2:29 left in the game to tie the record.
  • As the game entered its final minute, it looked like it would end with Vinall alongside Vagelatos in the record book once again. But, with 55 seconds left, Vinall slammed home the record-breaking shot after another feed from Harkins from behind goal. Then, for good measure, Vinall found the back of the net one last time in the final second of the game, this time with an assist from junior Hali Sibilia, to eclipse Vagelatos' record by two with her 162nd career goal.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Despite Vinall's historic eight-point effort on Saturday, the Eagles couldn't overcome the Mids' 9-0 run midway through the game and fell to Navy, 20-13.
  • Vinall led the team with her seven goals and nine draw controls, followed by junior Hali Sibilia who earned a season-high three points off two goals and an assist.
  • Freshman Emma Fiore also closed with a season-best, pulling down six draw controls.
  • Casey Harkins and junior Katie Pierce also added a pair of goals each. Harkins led with four assists followed by one from Vinall, Sibilia, senior Erica Skowron, and sophomore Emma Hare.
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
  • Emma Vinall continues to be one of the top-ranked players in the country for the Patriot League. She is the only player in the conference to sit in the top-15 in Division I in both scoring and draw controls - she is fourth for goals per game, sixth in points per game, and 15th in draw controls per game. She is also one of the top players in the country in free position opportunities, shooting 83.3 percent and averaging 1.43 goals per game for fourth and eighth  in Division I, respectively.
  • Vinall also ranks among the top tier of active players for career statistics. She is one of only two players in the country to have scored over 160 goals after fewer than 50 games (162 goals in 44 career games), and ranks fifth out of all active Division I players with her 3.68 goals per game average over the last four years. She also ranks 12th for her points per game average (4.25) throughout her career.
  • Casey Harkins joins Vinall in the national rankings, currently sitting in 13th for assists per game (2.57) and 25th for points per game (4.86). She also ranks in the top five in the Patriot League for both categories.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
  • Emma Vinall leads the Eagles with 40 points in her seven games this season, including a team-high 34 goals. She also ranks first for the Eagles with her 50 draw controls.
  • Casey Harkins is next on the offensive end with 34 points off a team-high 18 assists and 16 goals.
  • Junior Ashley Go leads the team on the defensive end with eight caused turnovers while senior defender Sarah Boney leads with 12 ground balls.
  • Freshman Helena Morrison has taken over the starting role in goal for the Eagles in the last three outings. She has 24 saves this season, including a career-high 10 against Bucknell on April 3, and is averaging 17.33 goals against with a .293 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN HAWKS
  • Lehigh joins Loyola Maryland as the two teams out of the South Division to have secured berths in the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks are 6-3 overall, 5-1 in the conference, after winning six of their last seven games. They come into the midweek matinee off back-to-back wins over #21 Navy, 12-7, and Lafayette, 18-5. The last Lehigh loss was to #13 Loyola Maryland on April 3, 15-11.
  • Sondra Dickey was selected as the IWLCA National Co-Defensive Player of the Week after picking up a career-high six caused turnovers during the win over Lafayette. She also led the team with six ground balls, seven draw controls, and had three points (2g, 1a).
  • Dickey leads the Mountain Hawks with 40 draw controls, 27 ground balls, and 25 caused turnovers after the first nine games of the season.
  • Katia Carnevale leads the scoring effort, though, with 30 goals followed by Dickey with 28. Emma Eberhardt has a team-high 36 points and leads with 22 assists alongside her 14 goals.
  • Samantha Sagi has worked as Lehigh's primary goalkeeper this season, putting in 500 minutes in goal. She has 76 saves and a 9.96 goals against average for a .478 save percentage after nine games.
