INSIDE THE SERIES
  • In a series that dates to the 1979 season, American has a slight 13-11-9 edge over Navy.
  • Over the last five matchups between American and Navy, the Eagles have a 2-1-2 advantage, however, the two programs have played tightly-contested matches over that span with the scoring margin being 9-7 in favor of the Midshipmen.
  • Last season, the Eagles drew Navy with an 85th-minute goal by David Coly to clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. AU went on to win their first conference title since 2004.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • Jack Green has been named Patriot League Midfielder of the Week in back-to-back weeks after scoring three goals in his last two games. He is the first Patriot League player to earn the honor in back-to-back weeks since it was first awarded by the PL in 2016.
  • Since a 3-0 loss at Loyola on Oct. 12, the Eagles have rattled off three straight PL wins and are unbeaten in their last four matches. In their last nine matches, the Eagles are 6-1-2 as they appear to be peaking at the right time.
  • Dominic Dominguez has played exceptionally well since taking over the starting keeper role on Sept. 25. The freshman leads the league with a .794 save percentage and ranks second with a 0.95 GAA, allowing seven goals in eight games.
SEEDING SCENARIOS
  • American can finish anywhere from No. 1 to No. 4 in the final Patriot League standings.
  • They can clinch the No. 1 seed with a win over Navy, a Loyola loss and a Holy Cross loss or tie.
  • There are multiple scenarios in which AU ends up with the No. 2 seed: win, Loyola win/tie, and Holy Cross loss/tie; win, Loyola loss, and Holy Cross win; tie and Holy Cross loss.
  • If AU, Loyola and Holy Cross all win, the Eagles would be No. 3. They would also clinch No. 3 with a win, Loyola tie, and Holy Cross win.
  • If the Eagles lose on Wednesday, they'll be locked into the No. 4 seed.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NAVY
  • Navy currently sits in fourth place in the Patriot League standings and can finish seeded anywhere from No. 2 to No. 5 in the conference tournament. The best-case scenario for the Mids is to clinch the No. 2 seed with a win/draw combined with a Holy Cross loss.
  • Tyler Fahning has proven to be one of the top goalkeepers in the Patriot League this season, allowing just 13 goals and tallying 41 saves for a 0.78 goals against average and a .759 save percentage. The senior goalkeeper also has a league-high nine shutouts in 2021, that also ranks as the second-most in the nation this season.
  • Navy boasts an impressive 11-4-1 mark, but are just 2-3-1 on the road. The Mids are also 2-3 in their last five matches played.
INTERNATIONAL EAGLES
  • With its remarkable location in Washington, D.C., American has long attracted students from all around the globe. The men's soccer program is no different.
  • The program boasts players from England (Malachy McGovern), Senegal (David Coly), Cameroon (Jerry Zouantcha), Sweden (Viggo Sjoberg), and Norway (Mattias Cooper).
  • Several others on the team have immediate family ties internationally, which makes for a diverse group of guys playing the beautiful game.
OH, BROTHER
  • Jerry Zouantcha returned to AU for a fifth season this fall and gets a nice treat as a result. He will get to play alongside his younger brother, Dilane.
  • Dilane scored his first career goal against Old Dominion in his first career game, while Jerry waited until his sophomore season to find the back of the net.
  • AU Men's Soccer has a proud history of brothers, most notably the Kuykendalls. Kris, Shawn, and JP all played for the Eagles in the early 2000s, leading AU to the NCAA Tournament in 2001, 2002, and 2004.
  • Their father, Kurt, was an All-American goalkeeper for AU in the 1970s and is enshrined in the Cassell Hall of Fame alongside his late son, Shawn.
TRANSFER MARKET
  • During the spring 2021 season, in year two under Zach Samol, the Eagles relied heavily on impact transfers.
  • David Coly joined AU after spending the 2015 and 2016 seasons at Washington, while Nicolas Blassou returned to the DMV after beginning his career at Kentucky. Both players were named All-Conference in the first season in the nation's capital.
  • Ben Severe dealt with injuries during his time at Villanova but played a valuable role defensively for AU down the stretch last season. He should continue making an impact in his senior season.
  • Mattias Cooper is the final transfer on AU's roster, joining the program after two seasons at Elon. He was Third Team All-CAA a season ago after leading the team in points (6), goals (2) and assists (2).
