All-Time Record: American leads, 13-4

WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team (5-6, 1-0 PL) will look to pick up its fourth consecutive win and remain undefeated in Patriot League play this weekend as the Eagles travel to Boston University for a 2 p.m. tip on Sunday.

THE SERIES
  • AU holds a 13-4 advantage over the Terriers in the youngest series for the Eagles in the league - the two teams met only three times in the 1980s before BU joined the Patriot League in 2013.
  • The Eagles are on a five-game win streak, having not lost to BU since February 7, 2017 in Boston, 71-62.
  • The two teams last met in Washington on Feb. 20, 2019. American took the 50-48 win after a buzzer-beater from the then-freshmen Jade Edwards, who hit four of her five points in the final 30 seconds to secure the home win.
  • Head coach Megan Gebbia is 12-2 against the Terriers in her tenure.

LAST TIME OUT

  • American earned its third come-from-behind victory of the season on Thursday, overpowering Colgate, 63-61, to open the PL slate at 1-0.
  • Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi got things rolling for the Eagles with 15 points in the first half behind a career-high 5-for-7 shooting from long range.
  • It was sophomore Jade Edwards, though, who brought it home, as she hit 14 of her game-high 20 points in the second half, including all four of the team's field goals in the fourth quarter.
  • Junior Indeya Sanders continued to contribute in every statistical category, leading the team with eight rebounds, eight assists, four steals, and a block to go along with her six points.
  • The Eagles separated themselves early with a 7-0 advantage by the 6:56 mark. The Raiders nearly erased that lead by the end of the stanza, though, landing within one at 15-14 after holding AU to a scoreless 3:30 coming out of the first timeout.
  • Although Colgate picked up a pair of leads to open the second quarter, American was quick to respond and by the half had built up its largest lead of the game at 43-30.
  • Once again, third quarter woes plagued the Eagles the Raiders retook the lead with a 21-6 run through the stanza. Edwards and sophomore Laura Graytok were the only two Eagles who managed to get on the board after Colgate shut down the hot hand of Marenyi.
  • Edwards continued to manage the offensive output of the Eagles' in the fourth quarter, as she hit all four of AU's field goals for 10 points. Sanders, Marenyi, and sophomore Emily Fisher also hit key free throws down the stretch to deliver American its 63-61 victory.

#AUWBB vs. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE

  • American holds a 241-120 overall record (.668) against Patriot League teams, and is 192-89 (.683) since joining the league in 2001-02.
  • The Eagles have been one of the powerhouses in the Patriot League over the past two seasons, accumulating a record of 33-4 during the regular season with losses to only Bucknell (3) and Navy.
  • Holy Cross is the only team in the conference that holds an advantage over AU with a series record of 22-19.

FIVE ON FIVE

  • The Eagles have kept a fairly consistent starting lineup through the first nine games of the season - only Emily Fisher and Taylor Brown have moved in and out of the starting five. Kaitlyn Marenyi, Morgan Bartner, Indeya Sanders, and Jade Edwards have started every game.
  • Sanders (35.4), Edwards (33.6), and Marenyi (33.2) are all averaging over 30 min./game. In her seven starts, Fisher has averaged 29.4 min./game, and Brown has averaged 27.8 in her four starts.
  • All six starters have hit new career-highs so far this season - Edwards (24 pts., 5 assists), Fisher (22 pts., 8 assists, 3 steals), Bartner (18 pts., 7 reb.), Sanders (8 assists, 4 steals, 3 blocks), Brown (11 pts., 5 reb., 3 assists, 2 blocks), and Marenyi (5 made 3's).
  • The starting five has been dominant for AU, accounting for 86.0 percent of scoring (51.8 ppg) and 73.4 percent of rebounds (21.8 rpg).
  • Although the team is holding a -3.6 scoring margin against its opponents, the starting five has actually outscored the opposition by 7.3 ppg.

KEEP IT CLEAN

  • American leads the PL and is 14th in Division I for fewest personal fouls per game, averaging only 13.7 per game and allowing opponents only 10.9 free throw attempts per game.
  • Ohio appeared on the line more than any AU opponent so far this season with 18 free throw attempts while Villanova (9), Saint Joseph's (5), and George Washington (2) were all held to under 10.

EDWARDS COMING IN STRONG

  • Sophomore Jade Edwards has had the best start in a decade for the Eagles, averaging 16.8 ppg after 11 games. The last player to average higher at this point in the season was Michelle Kirk in 2009-10 (19.6 ppg) en route to a program-record 565-point season.
  • She has consistently sat within the top-3 of the PL rankings for scoring all season, including leading for two long stretches. She currently sits in second behind the PL Preseason Player of the Year Lauren Manis (18.7).
  • Edward's scored 20+ points on five occasions this season, including back-to-back career-highs with 24 points against Villanova (11/14) and High Point (11/18).
  • She was a leading force in all three of the fourth quarter comebacks this season...
  • EDWARDS IN THE FINAL 10
GAME 4Q PTS. (GAME TOTAL) WIN MARGIN
High Point 12(24) 8
Radford 6 (13) 4
Colgate 10 (20) 2

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN

  • Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi has taken on a new role during her final year in the red, white, and blue, moving out of the point guard position and into a shooting guard role.
  • Although she is averaging just under where she was this time last season (12.3 ppg vs. 13.4 ppg), she has stepped up her game from the perimeter, averaging 2.8 made 3's per game compared to 1.5 per game last year.
  • She hit a career-high 5 of 7 from the perimeter against Colgate.
  • Marenyi has been consistent over the last three games, hitting 16 points in the wins against Radford (12/15), George Washington (12/22), and Colgate (1/2).
  • Her career 37.8 percent (77-208) shooting from long-range ranks fourth in the AU record books after she broke the single-season record last year with 46.4 percent (32-69).

HOW ABOUT THOSE HANDS

  • Coming in at only 5'6", junior Indeya Sanders is not the player you'd expect to rank second in the PL for blocks (1.2 per game). She has 13 total on the season, including a career-high three against Villanova.
  • Arguably the best all-around player for the Eagles, Sanders leads the team in rebounds (6.0), assists (5.0), steals (1.9), blocks (1.2), and is third in scoring (7.8).
  • She is the only player in the Patriot League to lead her team in assists (5.0) and blocks (1.2) per game, let alone in steals (1.9) and rebounds (8.0), as well.
  • She is also the only player in the league to rank in the top five in both assists (third) and blocks (second).
  • Sanders also leads the team in assist/turnover ratio (1.6), and has had a positive ratio in all but two games this season - Ohio (4-4) and George Mason (1-4).
  • She picked up a career-high four steals against George Mason, Saint Joseph's, and Colgate, and tied her career-high with eight assists against Colgate.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS

  • BU's nonconference story this season was eerily similar to that of American - after falling in the season opener to Marist, the Terriers hit back-to-back wins before suffering a five-game losing streak. Like the Eagles, though, the Terriers picked up a pair of victories over Dartmouth and Northeastern to close the nonconference slate.
  • BU enters the Sunday matinee off a 59-57 loss at the buzzer to Lafayette on Thursday.
  • Freshman Maggie Pina earned her third 20+ point performance of the season, leading the team with 26 off 9-of-18 shooting from the field, 5-of-10 from the perimeter.
  • Katie Nelson led on the boards with nine rebounds while Riley Childs pitched in four assists, and Sydney Johnson came away with four steals.
  • Nelson is among the top three-point performers in the league with 33 of her 56 field goals coming from the perimeter so far this season (.393). She is averaging a team-high 14.4 ppg and is followed by Nia Irving's 11.3 ppg and Pina's 10.6 ppg.
  • Childs and Irving have shared responsibilities on the boards with 6.8 rpg and 6.2 rpg, respectively.
  • BU is averaging 62.4 ppg while its opponents have scored 65.9 ppg through the first 12 of the season. The Terriers have shot 40.0 percent from the field, 35.8 percent from three, and 67.8 from the line while bringing down 33.2 rpg.
