All-Time Record: American leads, 36-6

WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball (7-10, 3-4 PL) will look to pick up a key Patriot League win on Saturday as the Eagles visit Colgate (13-5, 5-2 PL) for a 2 p.m. tip in Hamilton, N.Y.

SERIES HISTORY
  • American has dominated the 42-game series, 36-6, since its debut on January 9, 2002 (W, 79-77).
  • The Eagles are on a 27-game win streak against the Raiders dating back to March 4, 2007.
  • The last time AU lost to Colgate was a 66-53 decision in Hamilton on February 10, 2007.
  • American's last trip to Cotterell Court was one for the record books, as a program record 37-point performance from then-senior Cecily Carl paced the Eagles to a 71-66 win.
THE STARTING FIVE
  • The Eagles opened Patriot League play with a gritty 63-61 win over the Raiders on January 2. AU held off a late advance from the Raiders to extend its win streak to 27 consecutive games dating back to the 2006-07 season.
  • American comes into the game off a 63-44 home win over Loyola Maryland on Wednesday. Junior Indeya Sanders led the team with her second double-double of the season (18p, 10r), followed by 11 from senior Kaitlyn Marenyi and sophomore Maddie Doring, and a career-high 10 from freshman Lauren Stack.
  • Marenyi dropped to third in PL play with her 14.9 ppg over the last seven games. She is ninth in the overall rankings (13.1) while sophomore Jade Edwards continues to sit within the top three at third with 14.3 ppg.
  • After ranking within the top three in the league for most of the season, Sanders has dropped to fourth in the PL for blocks per game (0.9) after hitting a three-game dry spell. She broke the drought against the Greyhounds with two.
  • This is the fourth game in the last five that the Eagles have faced one of the top-ranked teams in the league. They opened the stretch against the current No. 4 Lehigh (1/11), followed by Bucknell (1st), and Holy Cross (3rd). The Raiders are currently ranked second in the league while AU sits in seventh.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Junior Indeya Sanders led AU with her second double-double of the season, putting up 18 points and 10 boards in the team's largest win of the PL season against Loyola Maryland, 63-44.
  • Sanders was one of four Eagles to finish in double-figures, followed by 11 points from senior Kaitlyn Marenyi and sophomore Maddie Doring, and a career-high 10 points from freshman Lauren Stack.
  • Marenyi closed her 30 minutes of play without a single turnover - her second +30-minute game of the season without giving up the ball.
  • The Eagles closed shooting 39.6 percent from the field (19-48), 22.2 percent from three (4-18), and 84.0 percent from the line (21-25) behind a perfect 6-for-6 effort from Sanders and 3-for-3 from Doring.
  • American forced 20 turnovers from the Greyhounds while giving up 17, and held the advantage in points off turnovers, 24-7, second chance points, 10-5, and bench points, 27-13.
  • The Eagles trailed Loyola after a slow start and entered the second quarter at a 15-9 disadvantage.
  • The Greyhounds briefly spread the gap to eight early in the second quarter, but an 8-0 run from Sanders and Doring tied the game at 17-17. By the end of the half, AU built up a two-point lead at 30-28.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter and hit a drought in the final 4:00, combining for only seven points. But the Eagles were able to maintain a one-point lead at 40-39 heading into the fourth.
  • It was all AU during the final 10 minutes as the Eagles put down a 23-5 run with the Greyhounds hitting only one field goal and three free throws.

#AUWBB vs. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE

  • American holds a 243-124 overall record (.662) against Patriot League teams, and is 194-93 (.676) since joining the league in 2001-02.
  • The Eagles have been one of the powerhouses in the Patriot League over the past two seasons, accumulating a record of 35-4 during the regular season with losses to only Bucknell (4) and Navy until BU (1/5), Lehigh (1/11), and Holy Cross (1/18).

KEEP IT CLEAN

  • American is second in the PL behind Lehigh, and 14th in Division I for fewest personal fouls per game, averaging only 13.6 and allowing opponents only 11.1 free throw attempts per game.
  • Ohio and Boston University appeared on the line more than any AU opponent so far this season with 18 free throw attempts while Villanova (9), Saint Joseph's (5), Bucknell (5), George Washington (2), and Holy Cross (6) were all held to under 10.

FIRST ONE TO 60...

  • Since Head Coach Megan Gebbia took the reins in 2013-14, the Eagles have put up an 98-32 record when scoring over 60 points, and 44-2 when scoring over 70.
  • Included in that run is a staggering 47-7 record since the 2017-18 season.
  • On the flip side of that, AU is 24-71 when its opponents score over 60 points.
  • In Gebbia's tenure, AU has allowed its opponents to score over 60 points only 95 times while the Eagles have crossed that threshold 130 times.

THAT FINAL STRETCH...

  • The Eagles have trailed their opponents by an average of 5.3 ppg heading into the fourth quarter, but have been able to cut into that lead during the final 10 minutes with a 1.8 ppg advantage.
  • AU had its most dominant fourth quarter of the season against Loyola Maryland, gapping the Greyhounds by 18 points, 23-5.
  • The third quarter in particular has been a grind, particulary during the early part of the nonconference season. AU trailed its first six opponents by 8.3 ppg before picking it up to lead its final four nonconference foes by 2.5 ppg.
  • Since the start of the conference season, PL opponents have led the Eagles by 2.7 ppg in the third stanza while AU has led in the fourth by an average of 3.6 ppg.
  • American has picked up three fourth quarter wins against High Point (11/18), Radford (12/15), and Colgate (1/2).
  • AU trailed by as much as six in the final 10 minutes against the Panthers before hitting a 15-5 run in the final 5:00 to win, 56-48.
  • Radford took a brief 5-point lead with 6:30 left on the clock, but the Eagles outpaced the Highlanders 11-7 in the final 5:00 to pick up the 59-55 win.
  • The Eagles kept tight with the Golden Gophers until the final 5:00 when a late 15-0 Minnesota run put them out of reach.

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS

  • After opening Patriot League play with an embattled 63-61 loss at American, Colgate hit a five-game win streak before falling to top-ranked Bucknell, 66-43, on Wednesday. The Raiders currently sit in a three-way tie for second with Holy Cross and Lehigh.
  • Rachel Thompson was the only Raider to land in double-figures with 10 points alongside her 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
  • Thompson leads the team with 17.4 ppg and 8.2 rpg followed by Abby Schubiger (10.8 ppg). Thompson ranks second among the league's scorers in points per game, field goal percentage (.546), assists (5.1), steals (2.3), and leads with assist/turnover ratio (2.4). Schubiger is third in field goal percentage at 53.7 percent.
  • The Raiders lead the league with their 70.6 ppg, .446 field goal percentage, and 17.2 assists per game. They have struggled on the defensive end, though, allong 63.8 ppg to rank eighth in the league.
NEXT UP...
AU will continue its two-game road stand on Wednesday, Jan. 29, with a trip to Lehigh. The Eagles will return home on Saturday, Feb. 1, for a 2 p.m. start against Lafayette.
