WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball is opening its 2019-20 season on the road this weekend with a 1 p.m. tip at Ohio on Sunday, November 9.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- American returns three starters from the 2018-19 squad that earned a share of the Patriot League regular-season title before advancing into the WNIT First Round.
- The Eagles have made postseason play in four of the last six years since head coach Megan Gebbia and her staff took the helm, including two berths into the NCAA Tournament.
- AU will look to replace the talented 2019 class which featured Patriot League Player of the Year, Cecily Carl, All-Patriot League selection, Elina Koskimies, and one of the top perimeter shooters in recent program history with Kaitlyn Lewis.
- Among the top returners for American is senior Kaitlyn Marenyi, who earned the single-season program record for three-point percentage with 46.4 percent (32-69), despite missing eight games with injury midway through the season. She leads the returners with 11.2 ppg from last season.
- Also highlighting the returners is PL All-Rookie Team selection, sophomore Jade Edwards, who leads the team with 5.0 rpg and 17 blocks.
- Junior Indeya Sanders rounds out the returners. She worked as the top distributor last season with 101 assists.
- Senior Morgan Bartner and sophomore Emily Fisher also picked up starts last season.
- The Eagles boast a youthful squad with nine of the 13 players being either freshmen or sophomores.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
- Ohio opened the 2019-20 slate on Tuesday, Nov. 5, with a road loss to #21 Syracuse, 66-54.
- Three players closed in double-figures for the Bobcats, starting with a 17-point performance from the 2019 MAC Defensive Player of the Year and Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year watch list selection, CeCe Hooks.
- Erica Johnson added another 13 points and Amani Burke closed with a dozen.
- The team closed shooting .306 from the field, .212 from 3-point range, and .563 from the line.
- Ohio opened as the favorite to win the MAC in the Preseason Coaches' Poll with 12 first-place votes for the regular season title and 10 for the tournament title. Hooks and Johnson were both selected to the Preseason All-MAC East Team.
- The Bobcats return three All-MAC selections from last season with Defensive Player of the Year, Cece Hooks, Freshman of the Year and Sixth Player of the Year, Erica Johnson, and Third Team All-MAC selection, Amani Burke.
- Ohio closed the 2018-19 season with a program record 30 wins after advancing through to the quarterfinal round of the WNIT.
