Women's Basketball Battles Back but Falls at Towson, 63-60

Box Score WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team (2-3) came up just shy of the fourth quarter comeback on Sunday, falling to Towson (2-3) on the road, 63-60.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi picked up a season-high 21 points to lead the Eagles followed by classmate Morgan Bartner, who hit 15 to tie her career-high.
  • Junior Indeya Sanders also helped lead the team with nine rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Although sophomore Jade Edwards was held to single-digits for the first time this season with eight points, she found plenty of other ways to contribute with nine boards, four assists, and three steals.
  • The Eagles out shot the Tigers, 40.7 percent (22-54) to 37.5 percent (24-64) from the field and 58.3 percent (7-12) to 53.3 percent (8-15) from the line.
  • Towson was led by three double-figure efforts, starting with 17 points from Myasia Jones. Kionna Jeter picked up 16 points and a team-high five steals, and Qierra Murray hit 14 alongside her seven rebounds and five assists.
  • Nukiya Mayo led on the boards with eight rebounds alongside two blocks and two steals.
  • The Tigers just barely edged out AU on the boards, 37-35, points off turnovers, 16-14, fast break points, 12-4, and second chance points, 9-7. The two teams were even, though, in the paint, 24-24.
  • American had one of its strongest starts of the season, picking up an 11-4 lead by the 6:40 mark in the first quarter to force an early Towson timeout. The Tigers picked up the pace coming out of the huddle, cutting into the lead time and again but the Eagles kept them at bay behind six points from Bartner, who opened shooting 2-for-2 from three, and five points from Marenyi.
  • AU entered the quarter break with one of its largest leads of the game at 21-12.
  • Towson controlled the tempo again the second quarter, chipping away at the AU lead and retaking a one-point advantage coming out of the media timeout.
  • A layup from Sanders and Bartner's third three of the day gave the Eagles back the lead, though, as the teams headed into halftime at 30-26.
  • American struggled to match the hot shooting of Towson in the third quarter, propelled by a 4-for-5 performance from the perimeter by the Tigers' Jeter.
  • A 25-10 Towson run throughout the stanza put the Eagles behind by 11 at 51-40 heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • An early three from Marenyi to open the fourth quarter sent the Eagles on a 14-5 run to land back within two with just over 4:00 remaining in the game.
  • A pair of layups from Marenyi and sophomore Taylor Brown narrowed the gap to one point on a couple of occasions, but the Tigers had a response every time and the Eagles failed to capitalize on a couple of possessions late and fell just short of breaking even.
