WASHINGTON - For the first time since being named head coach of the American University women's basketball team in 2013,
Megan Gebbia will return to her alma mater Towson on Sunday, November 24, to face the Tigers (1-3) at 2 p.m.
GEBBIA'S HOMECOMING
- Sunday's game will hold a little extra meaning for head coach Megan Gebbia, as she returns to Towson for the first time since 2000, and makes her debut in SECU Arena as a head coach.
- This isn't her first time coaching against her alma mater, though, as she has faced the Tigers five times as an assistant coach at UMBC and American. She is undefeated against the Tigers at 5-0 overall with four wins while with the Retrievers and one during her season as an assistant coach at American (1995-96).
- Gebbia helped lead the Tigers to a 48-64 record throughout her four years, including a 17-11 senior season when she also served as team captain. She graduated in 1994 with a degree in psychology.
SERIES HISTORY
- American leads the 16-game series against Towson, 9-7, despite falling in the last two meetings on Nov. 19, 2006 (69-57), and Nov. 18, 2005 (67-54).
- The two teams were nearly CAA foes, with the Eagles leaving the conference for the Patriot League after the 2000-01 season and the Tigers joining in 2001-02.
- The last AU victory was in Washington, D.C., on December 4, 2002, 58-46. The Eagles overcame Towson on their home court the season prior, 69-60.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- After hitting back-to-back wins at home over Villanova, 76-54, and High Point, 56-48, AU suffered its second road loss of the season on Thursday to George Mason, 73-55.
- Sophomore Jade Edwards was back atop the score sheet for the third consecutive game with 16 points, making it the fourth consecutive game that she has landed at or above her season-best from 2018-19.
- Edwards continues to not only lead the team, but the Patriot League as well with 19.8 ppg and a .596 field goal percentage.
- Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi also found herself back in double-figures with 11 points, all from the second half after a pair of early fouls forced her to the bench for all but one minute of the first half. Sophomore Maddie Doring also made an impact in her first game of the season, scoring 10 points to help lead the team.
- Junior Indeya Sanders picked up a career-high four steals and added another block as she continues to lead the team with 1.5 per game.
- Marenyi ranks second on the team with 11.3 ppg followed by sophomore Emily Fisher with 10.8 ppg.
- Fisher had a strong start to the season, tying her career-high with 15 points at Ohio before picking up 22 during the home debut against Villanova. She also averaged only 1.0 turnovers per game and 5.0 assists per game in her first three outings to rank at the top of the Patriot League. She now averages 4.5 apg and 1.8 turnovers per game.
- As a team, the Eagles are even with their opponents at 64.0 ppg, and have shot 44.6 percent from the field, 28.2 percent from three, and 72.3 percent from the line. They are also averaging 31.8 rpg and 13.3 apg.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
- Towson opened the season 0-3 with losses to Penn State, 73-67, San Diego State, 80-72, and San Diego, 81-76, before picking up its first win at home on Saturday against Mount St. Mary's, 73-57.
- Three players paced the Tigers against The Mount, starting with a 17-point effort from Myasia Jones and followed by 15 points from Kionna Jeter and Nukiya Mayo.
- Qierra Murray led on the boards with 10 rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists.
- Mayo leads the overall scoring efforts for Towson with 17.3 ppg, followed by Jeter (16.3 ppg) and Murray (10.3).
- Mayo also averages a team-high 8.3 rpg while Murray has pitched in 4.5 assists per game to lead both the team and the CAA.
- Tess Borgosz ranks second in the conference with 1.8 blocks per game.
- As a team, Towson is second in the CAA with 5.8 blocks per game and third after holding opponents to only 37.6 percent shooting from the field.
- The Tigers are averaging 69.8 ppg to their opponents' 72.8 ppg, and are shooting 38.6 percent from the field, 23.8 percent from beyond the arc, and 65.1 percent from the line. They are also averaging 39.0 rpg and 11.8 apg.
