WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team (1-1) will look for its second win of the season on Monday as the Eagles host High Point (1-2) at 7 p.m. for the team's first Pride Night.
PRIDE NIGHT
Monday's Pride Night game will celebrate Pride and inclusivity in the extended AU community, as the campus continues its work to develop a sense of belonging for all. The event is a collaboration and partnership with the Department of Athletics, AU's Faculty/Staff LGBTQ+ affinity group, the Pride Alumni Alliance, the Office of Sustainability, and also supported by the Office of the Provost, and the Office of Campus Life's Title IX, Inclusive Excellence, and Health Promotion and Advocacy Center departments. The first 300 fans to enter Bender Arena will receive a souvenir AU Pride flag.
SERIES HISTORY
- High Point picked up a 2-1 lead in the young series against the Eagles last year after a 66-61 win in High Point on December 20.
- AU won the series opener on Dec. 6, 2009, in Bender Arena, 67-46.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- American picked up its largest win since March 6, 2019 (Navy, 69-44) on Thursday with a 76-54 win over Villanova - the first victory over the Big East school in program history.
- Sophomore Jade Edwards (24 pts.) and Emily Fisher (22 pts.) paced the Eagles with their second consecutive career-high performance, each breaking 20 points for the first time.
- Fisher nearly filled the stat sheet with three rebounds, five assists and three steals without giving up a single turnover in 33 minutes of play.
- Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi also landed in double-figures with 14 points while giving up only one turnover for the second consecutive game.
- Junior Indeya Sanders led the team with nine rebounds and five assists alongside Sanders. She also came away with a career-high three blocks.
- The Eagles shot 51.9 percent from the field (27-52), 38.9 percent from three-point range (7-18), and 88.2 percent from the line (15-17).
- American is averaging 72.5 ppg after the first two games of the season and is shooting a league-high 50 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from 3-point range. The Eagles rank second in the PL with 15.5 apg and a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio.
- Three players are averaging in double-figures for AU, starting with Edwards who leads the league with 19.5 ppg. Fisher is third in the PL with her 18.5 ppg, and Marenyi ranks ninth with 15 ppg.
- Fisher leads the league in her own right with 6.5 assists per game and a .682 shooting percentage from the field. Edwards follows in second for shooting percentage (.615).
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
- High Point also picked up its first win of the season on Thursday with an 80-62 victory over East Tennessee State at home. The Panthers opened the season with back-to-back losses against Duke, 93-57, and the College of Charleston, 79-70, in overtime.
- Under first-year head coach Chelsea Banbury, High Point was chosen to finish sixth in the Big South preseason poll.
- HPU also has a young 2019-20 roster with five freshmen, three sophomores, one junior, and three seniors. Included among that number are two transfers with freshman Courtney Meadows (Georgetown) and junior Chyna McMichel (Miami Dade College).
- Senior Camryn Brown led the Panthers against East Tennessee State with a career-high seven three's to tie the program record. Classmate Miya Bull also paced HPU with her second consecutive double-double.
- Brown leads the team in scoring for the season, averaging 17.3 ppg with 42.5 percent shooting from the field (17-40) and 51.9 percent from 3-point range (14-27).
- Skyler Curran (13.7 ppg) and Miya Bull (11.3 ppg) also average in double-figures with Curran leading the team with most 3-point attempts at 8 for 37 (.216).
- As a team, High Point ranks third in Division I for total three's taken so far this season with 119, and sit behind only Florida Gulf Coast in three-point attempts per game (39.7). They also rank seventh for total made three's (35), and sixth for three's per game (11.7).
NEXT UP
American will open a four-game stretch on the road with a 7 p.m. tip at George Mason on Thursday. The Eagles will return home to host Minnesota on Sunday, December 8, at 2 p.m.
