Box Score WASHINGTON – Mia Castagnero scored with 1:41 gone in the second overtime to cap a late rally that lifted Richmond to a 12-11 win over American University in a women's lacrosse match Saturday.
The goal ended a steady comeback from an 11-7 deficit for the Spiders, who improved to 4-1 overall.
Castagnero and Natalia Chaney had hat tricks for Richmond, with Kim Egizi and Brooke Wilson scoring twice.
Richmond scored three straight goals, including a pair by Chaney, to take a 4-1 lead in the first 10 minutes. But Hoon scored twice late in the half to bring AU back within 4-3 at halftime.
The Spiders held a 12-10 edge in shots in the first half and took seven of the eight draw controls.
Hoon's third goal of the game came just 1:03 into the second half, but goals by Castagnero and Egizi in the next minute gave Richmond a two-goal edge.
From there, AU went on a 7-1 run before Norris scored with 12:53 left to give the Eagles an 11-7 lead.
DeSimone scored twice, Wojciechowski and Norris had goals for AU before Caroline Queally ended the run for the Spiders.
AU went on another run with
Sam Breeze, DeSimone and Norris scoring for the four-goal lead midway through the period.
Richmond pulled within one with 3:55 left on goals by Wilson, Chaney and Wilson again.
Castagnero scored with 0.4 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
AU held a 3-2 edge in shots in the first overtime period and each team had a free-position opportunity.
Richmond ended the contest with a 30-24 edge in shots and a 20-6 edge in draw controls.
Michaela Aymong had four saves in the Richmond net, despite playing only the final 23 minutes. Danni LeServe had five saves for the Spiders.
The Eagles open the Patriot League portion of their schedule on Tuesday, March 8 when they play host to Boston University at 3 p.m. American ends its three-game homestand on Saturday, March 12 against ODU at 1 p.m.
