Box Score WASHINGTON – Unable to withstand a fourth-period run by the visiting Bison, the American University women's basketball team dropped a 66-60 decision to Bucknell Wednesday evening at Bender Arena.
With the loss, the Eagles fell to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League, while the Bison improved to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the league.
Sophomore Emily Kinneston finished with 15 points and four assists to lead American, while freshman Cecily Carl added 12 points. Also scoring in double figures for the Eagles was sophomore Maria Liddane, who recorded 11 points and a team-high five assists and five steals.
For the Bison, Claire DeBoer led three players in double figures, scoring a game-high 22 points. Jacquie Klotz added 15 points and eight rebounds, while Kaitlyn Slagus scored 12 points.
Bucknell led by as many as 13 points early in the second period after going on an 11-0 run over a span of four minutes. After the Eagles cut the margin to nine points, Kyi English hit a three-pointer to give the Bison a 30-18 advantage with 5:10 remaining in the second period, prompting American to call a timeout. The Eagles responded well, scoring 15 straight points to take the lead before Bucknell hit a pair of free throws, bringing AU's advantage to 33-32 at the half.
American and Bucknell traded points throughout the third quarter, but the Eagles closed out the period on a 6-2 run, including a basket from Carl with one second remaining, to head into the final stanza with a 47-44 lead.
Kinneston scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter to give American its largest lead of the game, but the Bison answered with a 13-4 run to pull ahead for good. The Eagles committed six of their 14 turnovers in the final period, while Bucknell shot 80 percent from the field in the quarter, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, to seal the win.
American outshot Bucknell with a season-high 49 percent from the field, but gave up eight three-pointers by the Bison. Bucknell also had a slight advantage on the boards and scored 13 second-chance points, compared to just two for American.
The Eagles hit the road this Saturday, Jan. 9, for their next Patriot League contest, as they visit Lehigh in a 2 p.m. contest.
