WASHINGTON – After two weeks away from home, the American University volleyball team returns to Bender Arena this weekend, Sept. 18-19, for the AU Volleyball Classic.
The tournament features two games on Friday, with Virginia facing UMBC at 4:30 p.m., while American plays William & Mary at 7 p.m.
Saturday's action begins at 11 a.m., as American takes on UMBC, followed by William & Mary versus Virginia (1:30 p.m.), UMBC versus William & Mary (4:30 p.m.) and American versus Virginia (7 p.m.).
American enters the weekend with a 6-4 overall record after sweeping the competition at the Columbia Invitational last weekend. The Eagles posted 3-0 victories over Northeastern, NJIT and host Columbia.
Senior Allison Cappellino led the way for American at the Columbia Invitational, averaging 3.0 kills and 2.88 digs per set to earn tournament MVP honors. She was selected as the GEICO AU Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance.
Joining Cappellino on the all-tournament team were classmates Kristyna Lindovska and Monika Smidova. Lindovska averaged 2.5 kills, 1.5 blocks and 1.38 digs per set for the weekend, while Smidova averaged 9.22 assists and 3.22 digs per set and posted a .600 hitting percentage.
For the season, Cappellino leads the Eagles with 2.81 kills and 2.63 digs per set. Lindovska adds 2.52 kills and 1.06 blocks per set, while Smidova averages 8.94 assists and 3.06 digs per set, along with a .387 attack percentage. Additionally, sophomore Erin Swartz leads the league in blocks per set with 1.43.
William & Mary enters this weekend's tournament with a 5-5 overall record. The Tribe went 2-1 at the ECU Pirate Invitational last weekend, defeating Western Carolina (3-2) and Hampton (3-1), before falling to host ECU in straight sets.
Dessi Koleva leads William & Mary with 2.19 kills and 3.19 digs per set, while Heather Pippus adds 2.04 kills per set.
UMBC owns a 6-5 record on the season after going 3-0 at the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament last weekend. The Retrievers defeated Morgan State, 3-1, and picked up straight-set victories over Fordham and Coppin State.
Maddie Schneider averages a team-best 3.21 kills per set to lead UMBC, while Makenzie Morgen adds 2.91 kills and 2.32 digs per set.
Virginia has a 5-3 record this season after going 1-2 at the University of Alabama Tournament last weekend. The Cavaliers earned a 3-1 victory over Troy, but fell to Saint Louis (3-2) and the host Crimson Tide (3-1).
Kayla Sears leads Virginia with 2.82 kills per set, while Haley Kole and Natalie Bausback each average 2.68 kills per set.
