Volleyball Rolls Past Hampton, 3-0

HAMPTON, Va. - A season-high 12 services aces from the American University volleyball team highlighted a commanding sweep of Hampton on Wednesday night, led by five apiece from Alex Ioannou and Elise Sterling. A a two-match week for the Eagles starts with a win, and they move to 6-2 on the season.  

Notable
  • It was the most active match of the season for the freshman from Cyprus, as Ioannou added a season-high and game-high eight digs to her five aces tonight. Sterling also contributed three kills, two digs, and a block. 
  • The Eagles had their most efficient attacking match of the season, hitting .529 and committing just two errors. AU also had just four reception errors. 
  • Freshman outside hitter Sophie Dufour notched 15 kills, hitting a scorching .700 with just one error. She has now broken 100 on her season total, bringing the Patriot League-leading mark to 115.
  • Sophomore setter Deniz Dakak dished out 30 assists and racked up five total blocks for her most denials on the year so far. Prinzez Zeck followed behind her with four blocks, bringing her team-leading total to 26. 
  • Monyay Crowder logged her first kill of the year, and freshman setter Lexie Richards made her first appearance of the season in the third set. 
How it Happened
  • It was a comfortable first set for the Eagles, keeping Hampton in single digits with a 25-8 win. 
  • With the score 10-5, AU went on a 10-0 run that included seven kills and two service aces. Dufour finished off the set with an ace of her own to give AU a 1-0 lead on the match.
  • The second set was American's best of the season from the service area, with eight aces as a team. Ioannou had four, Sterling with three, and Dufour added one more on the way to a commanding 25-12 victory. 
  • The outside-hitting tandem of Salme Adeele Hollas and Dufour combined for seven kills to lead AU in the final set, supported by two block assists each for Blankenship and Dakak, and one more for Zeck.
