WASHINGTON - In an all-around quality performance for the American University volleyball team, the Eagles hit .383 and committed just six attacking errors on their way to a straight-set victory over North Carolina A&T on Saturday. Freshman
Sophie Dufour led the way with 15 kills, while
Carly Sciborski notched seven and hit .467 on the day. A strong start to the weekend, AU will make the short trip to Howard on Sunday to close out its non-conference schedule.
Notable
- Today marks the sixth time Dufour has led the Eagles in kills this season, and the seventh time she's finished in double-digits in the category.
- The seven kills matched with a .467 percentage was Sciborski's best attacking performance on the season so far, and she added three block assists.
- Deniz Dakak dished out 31 assists, keeping her at 30 or more in every match this year. She added three service aces, two blocks, and two digs.
- Bella Marrero had a strong day on the defensive end for AU, taking on 15 digs and committing just two reception errors.
- Elise Sterling led the way up front, logging four block assists.
- The Eagles are undefeated at home this season, conceding just one set in four matches.
How it Happened
- AU got out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and didn't loosen their grip from there, never trailing throughout the entire frame.
- With a 23-15 advantage, the Eagles earned a spectacular point after the longest rally of the day. Marrero came up with a diving dig, slipping her hand just under the ball before it hit the hardwood to keep it alive for a set from Prinzez Zeck. Salme Adeele Hollas rose to it, firing down a kill to put AU a point away from winning the set.
- Dufour had four kills, while Sciborski went three for three on her attempts to boost AU to the 1-0 lead on the match.
- The second set wasn't as comfortable for American, as the Aggies led it late 20-19.
- Led by three Dufour kills and an ace to end it, the Eagles went on a 6-1 run to close the set commandingly at 25-21. The freshman totaled six kills in the frame.
- Dufour added five more kills in the third set, as AU cruised to a 25-16 win.
- The Eagles were also sparked by four service aces in the final set — two from Dakak, one from Alex Ioannou, and another from Hollas.
