WASHINGTON – Looking to return to the win column, the American University volleyball team is back in action this weekend, Sept. 11-12, at the Columbia Invitational.
The Eagles play Northeastern Friday at 4:30 p.m., while facing NJIT and the host Lions on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
American, coming off its toughest stretch of the season, enters the weekend with a 3-4 overall record. The Eagles have lost four straight matches, with three of those losses coming to nationally ranked opponents, including second-ranked Florida.
AU went 0-3 at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic last weekend. The Eagles fell to then-No. 25 UCLA and No. 17 Hawaii in straight sets, while dropping a 3-1 decision to Iowa.
Senior Allison Cappellino, who was selected to the Wahine Volleyball Classic all-tournament team, leads American with 2.75 kills and 2.54 digs per set. Classmate Kristyna Lindovska adds 2.52 kills per set, while setter Monika Smidova averages 8.83 assists and 3.0 digs per set, along with a .321 attack percentage.
Northeastern enters this weekend's tournament with a 2-7 overall record following a five-set win over UMass Lowell on Tuesday. Brigette Burcescu leads the Huskies with 3.43 kills per set, while Gabrielle Eyl averages a team-best 3.57 digs per set.
NJIT currently owns a 2-4 record on the season and is coming off a pair of 3-1 victories over St. Francis Brooklyn and Rider.
Danica Vukotic averages 3.85 kills and 3.70 digs per set to lead the Highlanders, while Nina Vukotic adds 2.45 kills per set. Additionally, Adriana Nieto leads NJIT in digs per set with 4.0.
Columbia has an 0-3 overall record after dropping all three matches at the Stephen F. Austin Invitational last weekend. The Lions fell to Texas Tech and the host Ladyjacks in straight sets, while losing to South Dakota State in five.
Zoe Jacobs leads Columbia with 2.78 kills per set, while Bailey Springer adds 2.44 kills per set.
Following this weekend's tournament, the Eagles are back home Sept. 18-19 for the AU Volleyball Classic, as they host William & Mary, UMBC and Virginia. Tickets are available online now at www.aueagles.com/tickets, with a special weekend rate of $14 for adults and $7 for youth.
