Box Score HAMILTON, N.Y. — The dream of an NCAA Tournament berth will be in the hands of the College Cup committee on Monday afternoon, as the American University men's soccer team - which amassed 14 wins, 12 shutouts, a 10-game unbeaten streak and four wins over nationally ranked opponents - fell to Lehigh, 2-1, in the Patriot League Championship on Sunday afternoon at Colgate.
"I am so proud of this team and our four seniors," said head coach Todd West.
The NCAA Selection Show is at 1 p.m. on Monday afternoon. The Eagles compiled an impressive resume this season to go along with a top 45 RPI in the nation.
The full 48-team field will be announced online at NCAA.com as the Eagles vie for one of 25 at-large spots.
"I feel that our team should receive an at-large bid after defeating Virginia, Loyola Marymount and Hofstra during the regular-season and Boston University in the PL Tournament," said West.
Although the Eagles did not come away with the result they had anticipated, AU faced a tough defensive unit from Lehigh that packed the box the entire game. AU finished with a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
American forced Lehigh keeper Joe Brogan to make five saves, as the Eagles drove down the field and attempted two shots and two corners in the final five minutes.
AU trailed 1-0 at the break after Jamie Luchini's one touch scored 30 minutes into the contest. Mark Forrest and John Mark Charpentier were credited with the assists.
The first 45 minutes were evenly played aside from Lehigh's tally. Both teams had six shots each and AU keeper Dylan Hobert made three saves.
It took 15 minutes from the start of the final frame for the Eagles to capture the equalizer on a header by Dale Ludwig off a cross by Joe Iraola.
However, the Mountain Hawks responded quickly and regained the lead less than two minutes later on a give-and-go from Alex Greene to Luchini for the game-winner.
American's Dylan Hobert, Jordan Manley and Jake Garcia were selected to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team. Lehigh's Jamie Luchini was announced as the tournament most valuable player after scoring twice in the finals.
NOTES: American has eight shutouts in its last final 10 games … The Eagles have scored 45 goals this season compared to 25 last season … American is in the NCAA top 10 in goals socred this season.
