Box Score PRINCETON, N.J. – Shooting just 25 percent from the field, the American University women's basketball team dropped a 72-34 decision to Princeton in its season-opener on Friday evening in Jadwin Gymnasium.
Junior Lauren Crisler led American with eight points and five rebounds, while sophomore Emily Kinneston added eight points and three assists.
Annie Tarakchian finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Princeton, which entered the season ranked 25th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
Defense was on display in the first period, with the two teams combining for just two field goals. However, the Tigers knocked down three of four free throws in the quarter to take a 7-2 lead into the second period.
Both teams shot better in the second quarter, but Princeton began to pull away by using its advantage at the free throw line, hitting 8-of-9 from the charity stripe to extend its advantage to 27-14 at the half.
Princeton's offense continued to improve after the intermission, as the Tigers shot 65 percent in the second half, including 9-of-13 from beyond the arc.
The Tigers also dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Eagles 49-20 for the game.
American is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 17, when it visits 21st-ranked George Washington in a 7 p.m. contest.
