Box Score Facing scorching heat with a field temperature approaching 100 degrees and a team ranked 26th in the country, American men's soccer faced several challenges in the #Kuykenstrong D.C. College Cup title game. AU was within a goal for much of the match, but George Mason was able to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard and capitalized on a first half penalty kick.
It was a physical matchup throughout between the D.C.-metro foes with 17 total fouls and three yellow cards issued by the referees. The weather also played a large factor with officials stopping play midway through each half for team water breaks.
The contest was evenly match and saw the Eagles lead the Patriots, 11-9, in shots, but the difference came in the 29th minute as an AU foul in the box led to a Mason penalty kick.
Patriot forward Timi Mulgrew, who netted a hat trick in his first game of the season, came through for George Mason, going top right for the game-winning goal.
The score was the first ever goal let up by junior goalkeeper Dylan Hobert, who made three saves in the contest.
American pushed for much of the second half, totaling seven shots in the period to Mason's four, but could not find the equalizer.
George Mason keeper Steffen Kraus also made three saves in the game, registering his second-straight shutout.
Eagles Liam Robley, Jordan Manley and Jake Weinreb were named to the All-Tournament Team.
American will continue to be tested early this season, traveling to Albuquerque, N.M., for the UNLV Lobo Invitational where AU will take on No. 1 UCLA and UC Riverside, starting Friday, September 5.
