Box Score American University men's soccer honored its former star player and coach as it opened the year with a 2-0 win over George Washington in the #Kuykenstrong D.C. College Cup.
Though the D.C. Cup has been in existence for 14 years, it was newly branded in honor of Shawn Kuykendall '05.
The Eagles used the extra motivation against the Colonials, and after a scoreless first half, sophomore Joe Iraola came through with game-winner as he finished the feed from junior Liam Robley inside the box, making a fantastic run in the 73rd minute.
Only 10 minutes later, Robley added to his tremendous debut for American, bending a beautiful shot off a set piece from 30 yards out, giving AU the insurance goal.
George Washington pressed late, trying to get on the board, but the defense and stellar play of goalkeeper Dylan Hobert kept GW scoreless.
AU held the advantage in shots, 10-5, and made the most of its on-goal opportunities, netting 2-of-3. The Eagles also had three shots find iron; two hitting posts and one off the crossbar.
"I know Shawn would have loved this. He would have probably been doing pushups behind the bench because of all the energy he always had," said associate head coach Kris Hazard. "Our guys really know what this means to our program and school and did a great job executed our style of play."
American will look to keep in rolling and claim the #Kuykenstrong D.C. College Cup when they host George Mason, Sunday at 3 p.m.
