Complete NCAA Tournament Notes
The American University wrestling team is sending three
student-athletes to the 2014 NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City,
Okla. from March 20-22. American's line-up features returning
NCAA qualifiers Blake Herrin, Daniel Mitchell and David Terao.
What to Watch For
American will send three returning NCAA qualifiers onto the mat
in Oklahoma City as they look to join the elite ranks of the
program's All-Americans. The Eagles have had 16 All-Americans
in the last nine years and have registered five top 20 finishes in
that time, recording a program-best fifth place result in 2011.
Mitchell makes his fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and his
first since the 2011-12 championships after redshirting a year ago.
He earned an automatic bid to the tournament after placing third at
the EIWA Championships at 197 lbs. Mitchell is 24-7 this year and
leads the team with nine falls. The redshirt senior has also posted
four major decisions on the year and placed in every tournament he
competed in, finishing second at the Keystone Classic and Cliff
Keen Las Vegas Invitational while earning a third place result at
the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold.
Terao returns to the NCAA Championships for the second straight
year at 125 lbs. after placing second at the EIWA Tournament to
earn an automatic bid. He leads the team with an overall record of
32-8 and has tallied a team-high eight major decisions, six falls
and two tech falls on the year. Terao placed in every tournament he
competed in this season, winning the Keystone Classic with
runner-up results at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold and EIWA
Championships. He also finished fourth at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas
Invitational and Southern Scuffle.
Herrin is also returning to the NCAA Tournament for the second
consecutive year at heavyweight for American. The redshirt senior
owns a mark of 19-14 this season and placed fourth at the EIWA
Championships to earn an automatic bid to Oklahoma City. He ranks
second on the team with five major decisions and posted his first
fall of the year in his first round match of the EIWA Tournament.
Herrin is a two-time Brockport/Oklahoma Gold champion.
