Defensive Effort Lifts Women's Basketball Past Holy Cross, 58-53

Box Score

The American University women's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak, opening the second half of Patriot League play with a 58-53 victory at Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass.

Jen Dumiak led three double-digit scorers with 17 points, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the line, while Geleisa George scored 12 and Arron Zimmerman chipped in 10 points. Michelle Holmes posted a career-high 12 rebounds and Dumiak added seven as the Eagles outrebounded Holy Cross 40-27 for the game. Alexis Dobbs dished out a team-best six assists.

"I think this was a good game and a good test for us, especially after the Navy game," said Head Coach Megan Gebbia. "We were able to manage the clock in the last three minutes and get stops when we needed to get stops. We had great contributions from a lot of different people, Ti'Asia hit a big three and Geleisa stepped up and hit some pull-up jumpers and obviously Jen just played out of her mind offensively. I'm really proud of Michelle too, every time we put her out there she gives you something, whether its scoring, rebounding or just good defense. To me it was just an overall nice team win."

American (14-7, 7-3) maintained an early edge and went up 12-6 on a putback by George and bucket from Holmes at the 14:22 mark. A triple from Alex Smith made it a four-point game but Zimmerman drained a trey on the other end. Abigail Fogg laid it in on the dish from Dobbs on the next possession to put the Eagles back up 19-10 with 11:55 remaining.

Holy Cross (13-8, 5-5) made it a one-point game after a 5-0 run. Dumiak drove the length of the court and laid it in and then completed a three-point play with 49.6 seconds to go for the 30-24 lead. Raquel Scott hit a jumper with 30.6 seconds remaining in the half to cut American's lead to 30-26 heading into the intermission.

The Eagles shot 48.1 percent from the floor but were 1-for-6 from beyond the arc in the first half. The Crusaders went 10-for-30 from the floor and 3-for-9 from 3-point range.

Dobbs opened the scoring in the second half with a pull-up jumper and George hit one to put American up 34-26 at 16:34. Holy Cross answered with a 10-2 run to knot it up at 36-all and took its first lead on a trey by Smith with 11:59 to go. Ti'Asia McGeorge responded for the Eagles, drilling in a deep three from the top of the key to give American back the lead.

The Crusaders retook the advantage on a 5-0 run but a George jumper with 7:18 to go sparked an 8-0 run and put the Eagles on top for good. Holy Cross tallied five straight points but Dumiak hit a pair of free throws with 10.9 seconds to play to secure the 58-53 win for American.

Smith led the Crusaders with 15 points and seven assists in the game. Christine Ganser and Molly Hourigan registered a team-high four boards apiece.

The Eagles finished the game shooting 44.2 percent and were 3-for-12 from beyond the arc. Holy Cross shot 37.0 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from 3-point range.

American returns to Bender Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 5 to host Loyola (Md.) at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
