Box Score The American University women's basketball team registered its
fourth straight win, using a balanced attack on its way to a 72-57
rout of Lafayette on Saturday afternoon in Easton, Pa.
Every player scored for the Eagles and three reached
double-figures in the win. Alexis
Dobbs and Arron
Zimmerman had 12 points apiece and Geleisa
George added 11. George and Zimmerman each pulled down
five rebounds and Jen Dumiak
dished out three assists.
"We had a balanced attack once again and everyone who got on the
floor scored which is the goal for us offensively," said Head Coach
Megan Gebbia. "We ran our offense
better today and executed well in our motion for the most part. We
need to continue to learn how to play together and at the same time
play smarter. We did a better job of closing out the game in the
last three minutes which is definitely a positive I took away from
today."
American (12-5, 5-1) took a 14-3 lead early and, after a triple
by Linnel Macklin, went on another 8-0 run for the 22-6 advantage
with 8:41 to go in the half. Macklin notched three straight points
for the Leopards but Ti'Asia
McGeorge answered with her second triple for the 25-9
lead.
The two teams traded scores before a trey by Ari Booth
gave the Eagles a 34-14 lead with 2:57 remaining. A drive by
Lauren
Crisler maintained American's 20-point advantage.
Lafayette was able to outscore the Eagles down the stretch, 5-2, to
send American into the intermission up 39-21.
The Eagles shot 54.2 percent from the field and 62.5 percent
from beyond the arc in the first half while Lafayette shot 25.0
percent from the floor and went 3-of-11 from 3-point
range.
Lafayette (8-9, 2-4) struck first in the second half on a bucket
by Jamie O'Hare but American was able to take a 46-27 lead on a
steal and lay-in by Dobbs at the 15:53 mark, forcing the Leopards
to call an early timeout. A Zimmerman 3-point play sparked a 7-0
run for the Eagles as it took its largest lead, 53-29, with 11:30
to play.
The Leopards began to fight back, chipping away until it cut
American's lead to 15 on a triple by O'Hare, 65-50, with 3:51 to
go. The Eagles were able to hold off a rally, going 5-of-8 from the
line down the stretch for the 72-57 final score.
O'Hare finished with a game-high 14 points and Mackin added 13
for Lafayette. Kristan Liddle had six rebounds but the Leopards
were outrebounded 39-28 for the game.
American completed the game shooting 51.1 percent from the floor
and 46.2 percent from beyond the arc. Lafayette shot 36.2 percent
from the field in the game and was 7-for-21 from 3-point
range.
The Eagles head to Boston, Mass. next to take on one of the
Patriot League's newest members, Boston U., on Wednesday, Jan. 22
at 7 p.m.
"I'm excited to play Boston on Wednesday," said Coach Gebbia.
"It will be a challenge because they tend to shoot better at their
place but I think it's going to be important for us to continue to
focus on our defensive concepts."
Wednesday's game will be broadcast live on the Patriot
League Network.
