Balanced Effort Leads Women's Basketball Past Lehigh, 70-61; Watch Highlights

Five players reached double-figures for the first time since 2008 to help lead the American University women's basketball team to a 70-61 win over Lehigh on Wednesday night in Bender Arena.

Geleisa George scored a team-high 15 points, Arron Zimmerman added 12 and Alexis Dobbs, Jen Dumiak and Sarah Kiely each chipped in 10 points. Kiely pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for her third career double-double and her first of the season. Dobbs dished out a team-high seven assists with three steals. 

"As happy as I am with the win I can't wait to go back and watch the film to see where we made the errors and to try to correct them," said Head Coach Megan Gebbia. "I felt like Lehigh forced us to rush at times…We need to make sure we are patient next time we play them and make better decisions and we are going to work on that in the next few days."

Lehigh (8-8, 1-4) jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Eagles were able to get on the board with a Zimmerman trey at the 16:44 mark. American posted eight straight points to take an 11-8 advantage with 12:53 to go before a triple from Kayla Burton tied it up at 11-all. 

The Eagles answered with a 15-0 run to take a 30-14 lead with 3:10 to play, holding the Mountain Hawks without a basket for nearly six and a half minutes. Kerry Kinek ended the drought for Lehigh but Shaquilla Curtis completed a 3-point play for the 33-16 American lead with 1:03 remaining. The Mountain Hawks closed out the half with three straight points and the Eagles went into the break with a 33-19 lead. 

American (11-5, 4-1) outshot Lehigh 41.2 to 23.1 percent from the floor in the first half and 36.4 to 33.3 percent from 3-point range. 

Zimmerman notched four straight points out of the half and Dobbs knocked it away and dished it to George for the 39-21 lead at the 18:22 mark. The Eagles took its largest lead, 46-27, on five straight points from George but Kinek completed a 3-point play and hit a triple to cut it to 13-point game. The Mountain Hawks continued to chip away, making it a 10-point game, 50-40, on a 9-2 run with 9:31 to go. American answered with a 9-2 streak of its own for the 61-44 advantage.

Lehigh cut the lead to single-digits after a 12-2 run, making it a seven-point game with 1:14 remaining. American was able to hold off the rally as the Eagles went 7-of-8 from the line down the stretch on its way to a 70-61 win. 

Kinek led the Mountain Hawks with a game-high 21 points, adding five assists and five blocks. Lexi Martins posted a team-high five rebounds but American held a 44-35 advantage on the glass.

The Eagles finished the game shooting 41.0 percent from the floor and 26.3 percent from 3-point range. Lehigh shot 38.2 percent on the night, shooting 51.7 percent from the field in the second half. The Mountain Hawks also went 5-of-16 from beyond the arc. 

American will head out on the road on Saturday, Jan. 22 to take on Lafayette at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
