American University outdoor track student-athletes John Pope and Julia Sullivan have been named to the Academic
All-Patriot League Team, conference officials announced Monday.
Pope, a junior from Carlisle, Pa., has been recognized on the
Academic All-Patriot League Team for the sixth time in his career
and third time this season after being recognized for cross country
and indoor track earlier this year. He posted two top-10 program
times this season and qualified for the NCAA East Regionals in the
10,000 meter run. Pope finished fifth in the 10,000 at the Patriot
League Championships with an IC4A time and placed 18th in the
5,000. He also registered top-5 finishes at the Coastal Carolina
Invitational (3rd-3,000), Navy Invitational (3rd-5,000), Maryland
Invitational (2nd-1,500) and Colonial Relays (4th-10,000).
Pope carries a 3.85 cumulative GPA as an international studies
major and was also named to the USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Academic
Team this year, becoming just the second student-athlete in program
history to earn the recognition. He is a five-time Patriot League
Academic Honor Roll selection, five-time Dean's List honoree
and was the Patriot League Male Sportsmanship award winner in
2012.
Sullivan is recognized for the third time in her career and the
second time this season, being named to the Cross Country Academic
All-Patriot League team in the fall. The junior led the
women's team at the 2013 Patriot League Outdoor Championships
with her seventh place individual finish in the 1,500 meter run and
as the lead leg in the 4x800 meter relay team that placed sixth and
tallied the fifth-fastest mark at American. She posted the
10th-fastest time in program history in the 1,500 earlier this year
and posted her best result of the season with a third place finish
in the 1,500 at the Morgan State Legacy Meet.
The Northampton, Mass. native owns a 3.81 cumulative GPA as an
international studies and environmental studies double-major. She
is five-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient and
five-time Dean's List honoree.
Unlike the Academic Honor Roll, the Academic All-Patriot League
Team is limited to only 10 recipients on both the men's and women's
teams. To be eligible for either award, a student-athlete must have
at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in
his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at
their school are not eligible for the honors.
