Lacrosse Clinches Tournament Berth with 16-8 Win at Lehigh

The American University lacrosse team remained undefeated in the Patriot League and clinched a spot in the 2013 Tournament for the third straight year with a 16-8 victory at Lehigh on Sunday. 

Eight different players found the back of the net for the Eagles. Jordan Harrington led the team with a career-high six points on two goals and a career-best four helpers. Alex Lugovina tallied four goals while Kimberly Collins had four points on three goals and one assist. Emily Maher posted six draw controls in the game and Teal Harrison registered 13 saves.

American (6-7, 4-0) went up 3-0 early before three straight scores from Julie McBrien knotted it up with 18:39 remaining in the first half. Maher ended McBrien's scoring streak to give the Eagles back the advantage but Lehigh's leading scorer added another on a free position shot to tie it up at four. Back-to-back goals from Lugovina sparked a 5-0 run by American as it went into the half up 9-4. 

Lehigh (3-10, 1-4) struck first in the second half but the Eagles responded with four straight tallies for the 13-5 advantage with 22:46 left to play. Kendall Gardner ended the run for the Mountain Hawks but Lugovina and Collins found the back of the net again for its largest lead, 15-6. Maher added the last goal of the game for American, while Julie Tatios closed out the scoring with 1:36 remaining for the 16-8 final score.

The Eagles held a 17-9 advantage in draw controls and 26-25 edge in shots for the game. Lehigh maintained a 15-11 advantaged in ground balls collected. McBrien finished the day with five goals for the Mountain Hawks. 

American returns to Jacobs Field on Tuesday, April 9 at 3 p.m. to face Towson. The game will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
