Jasmine DePompeo's sudden victory double-overtime goal handed
the American University lacrosse team its first Patriot League loss
of the season as No. 14 Navy earned the regular season title with
an 11-10 win at Jacobs Field on Sunday afternoon.
Navy (16-1, 6-0) struck first on a free position goal from Loren
Generi but Emily

Wojciechowski gave the Eagles the 2-0 advantage at the
15:13 mark. The Midshipmen retook the lead on consecutive tallies
from Casey Browne and Aimee Gennaro with 11:40 to play. American
came back with a three-goal run as Kimberly
Collins scored with 21 seconds left in the half. Navy
was able to make it a one-score game going into the intermission
with Generi slipping it past Teal
Harrison with one second remaining.
The Midshipmen scored two more to take a 6-5 lead but American
(8-9, 5-1) notched three straight goals once again for the 8-6
advantage with 22:40 to play. Gennaro added her second to cut the
deficit to one, but Alex
Lugovina maintained the two-goal lead for the Eagles
on a free position shot. DePompeo tied it up, finding the back of
the net 40 seconds apart to knot the score at nine with 7:47
remaining. The Midshipmen collected the draw control but a caused
turnover by Lauren
Binstein gave the Eagles back the ball. American tried
to hold on for the game-winner, but was unable to get a shot past
the Navy defense to send the game to overtime.
The Midshipmen found the back of the net first in the extra
period, with Generi tallying her fourth of the day with 3:14 left.
Collins was able to tie it up at 10 on a free position shot after
her first attempt was off-target. Maher came up with the draw
control but Lugovina's attempt hit the post. Navy cleared but a
caused turnover from Laura
Dawson gave the Eagles back the ball with only 10
seconds remaining. Time ran out before American could send it back
down the field and the game went to sudden victory double-overtime,
where DePompeo clinched the regular season title for Navy.
Collins led the Eagles with the hat trick, extending her scoring
streak to 40 straight games, and Lugovina added three points off
two goals and one assist. Five players registered two draw controls
for American with Binstein and Wojciechowski collecting two ground
balls apiece. Dawson had three caused turnovers.
Generi finished with five points for the Midshipmen and Gennaro
added four, scoring two goals with two assists. Generi posted six
draw controls and Annie Foky stopped five shots as the starting
goalkeeper.
Both teams tallied 12 draw controls for the game, with American
collecting 12 ground balls to Navy's six.
The Eagles will be the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League
Tournament and will face third-seeded Holy Cross on Friday, April
26 at 7:45 p.m. in Annapolis, Md. The 2013 Patriot League
Championship will be held on Sunday, April 28 at 12 p.m. All games
