Collins scored a team-high four goals on Wednesday
afternoon at Jacobs Field as the American University lacrosse team
held on late to pick up a 7-6 win over Longwood in its final
non-conference game of the season.
Collins' four tallies marked her ninth game with at least three
goals and extended her scoring streak to 39 games, while Emily
Maher notched the hat trick for the Eagles. Maher also
recorded two draw controls and collected a team-best four ground
balls. Teal
Harrison posted 11 saves between the pipes.
American (8-8, 5-0 PL) took a 2-0 lead early on back-to-back
goals from Collins and Maher before the Lancers answered with two
straight scores to tie it up with 4:26 remaining in the first half.
The Eagles were able to take time off the clock before Collins was
able to convert on a free position shot with 15 seconds to play for
the 3-2 advantage at the intermission.
Longwood (9-7, 4-2 Big South) tied it up early in the second
half. Shannon Hurley collected the opening draw and Jamie
Brentlinger found the back of the net just 35 seconds into the
period. Brentlinger scored again to give the Lancers its first lead
of the game, 4-3, after a caused turnover by Lauren Prasnicki but
the Eagles were able to retake the lead on a free position goal
from Collins and score from Maher off the dish from Olivia
Mangan.
Brentlinger completed the hat trick on a free position goal to
tie it at 5-all with 20:11 to play. Maher and Collins had an answer
again for American with consecutive tallies for the 7-5 lead at
12:13. Katie McHugh was able to make it a one goal game, scoring
with 3:43 to play, but the Eagles were able to hold off the
equalizer as it picked up its second straight win, 7-6.
Brentlinger led Longwood with the hat trick and McHugh finished
with two goals as the team held a 22-16 advantage in shots on the
day. Sarah Butler registered four draw controls and Brentlinger
added three ground balls. The Lancers held a 10-5 edge in draw
controls for the game. Christian Acker made four saves as the
starting goalkeeper.
American closes out the regular season and will look to complete
its first undefeated Patriot League season in program history when
it hosts No. 14 Navy on Sunday, April 21 at 12 p.m. on Senior Day.
