The American University wrestling team went 1-1 in West Point,
N.Y. on Sunday afternoon, opening the day defeating Boston
University, 22-14, before dropping a 34-8 match to Army.
David
Terao was the only wrestler to go 2-0 on the day,
earning a 16-2 major decision over Boston's Bubba McGinley before
registering a 16-1 technical fall over the Black Knight's Hunter
Wood in 6:20.
"The results today did not show our effort," said Head Coach
Teague Moore. "In the Boston match we
out-wrestled our opponents and earned many late period points. The
Army match was lost on a number of close calls. David pushed
himself to a different level today. He forced himself into new
scoring positions that allowed for big scoring and match control.
He needed a weekend like this."
Terao jumpstarted the Eagles in its win over Boston as American
won six of 10 bouts in the match. Esteban
Gomez-Rivera posted a 15-13 decision in sudden victory
overtime for the 7-0 advantage. Kevin
Tao nearly registered a major decision in his match,
but finished with a 10-4 decision over Nick Tourville. Phillip
Barreiro, Keithen
Cast and Thomas
Barreiro earned three straight victories for the
Eagles with the Terriers winning the final two bouts for a 22-14
final score.
Terao also opened the second match against Army with a victory
but American dropped the next seven matches, with Tao being edged,
3-2, in extra time. Blake
Herrin posted the only other victory of the match for
the Eagles, picking up a 18-6 major decision over the Black
Knight's Christian Botero.
"Now we prepare to say goodbye to our seniors next Sunday at
home," continued Moore. "We're excited for this last home
dual."
American closes out its dual meet schedule on Saturday, February
16 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Bucknell for Senior Day.
