Career Nights from Dobbs, Zimmerman Power Women's Basketball Past Hampton

The American University women's basketball team held off an attempt at a second half comeback, picking up its second straight win with a 58-46 victory at Hampton on Wednesday night in Hampton, Va.

Alexis Dobbs led three double-digit scorers with a career-high 22 points, going 11-of-12 from the foul line, and Geleisa George added 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Arron Zimmerman tallied her first career double-double with a career-high 12 rebounds and 11 points. Holmes matched her career mark with 11 boards. Dobbs added seven rebounds and a team-high six assists in the win. 

Hampton (5-3) got on the board first after a putback by Nicole Hamilton but Zimmerman answered with a trey on a dish from Dobbs. The two teams traded scores before the Pirates converted three straight baskets to take a 10-5 advantage at the 12:06 mark. American took the lead on consecutive triples by Dobbs and Zimmerman but a lay-up by Hamilton gave Hampton a 14-13 edge with 6:52 remaining.

American (5-2) took a 17-15 lead on a drive by Zimmerman with 4:06 left to go in the first half. The Pirates cut the lead to one on a jumper by Hamilton but George answered with a bucket off the offensive board from Michelle Holmes for the 22-19 advantage with two minutes to play. Alyssa Bennett closed out the scoring in the first half with a bucket at the 1:20 mark to send the Eagles' into the break with a 22-21 edge. 

American shot 29.0 percent from the field and hit 3-of-16 three-point attempts in the first half. Hampton shot 25.7 percent from the floor and went 0-for-7 from beyond the arc.

Dobbs opened the scoring in the second half with a triple to spark a 16-2 run for the Eagles as it took a 38-23 lead with 11:11 left in the game. Bennett ended Hampton's seven minute scoreless drought with a jumper as the Pirates answered with a 7-1 run to get back within nine with 7:37 remaining. 

The Pirates continued to chip away at the Eagles lead with treys from Malia Tate-DeFreitas and Hamilton and made it a five-point game, 47-42, on consecutive buckets by Georgianna Gilbeaux and Hamilton with 3:19 left to play. But American went 9-of-10 from the foul line down the stretch and held Hampton without a basket in the final minute as it went on to win 58-46.

The Eagles shot 32.7 percent from the field, going 5-of-23 from beyond the arc, and finishing the night 21-of-26 from the foul line. American pulled down a season-high 51 rebounds, marking the first time an Eagles' squad has registered over 50 rebounds since March 9, 2008. 

Hamilton finished the night with a team-best 20 points and nine rebounds. Bennett also notched nine rebounds for the Pirates. Hampton was held to 25.8 percent shooting for the game and were just 2-of-16 from three-point range.

American returns to Bender Arena on Sunday, December 8 at 2 p.m. when it hosts Drexel. The game will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
