Box Score The American University women's basketball team dropped its final non-conference game of the season, 77-64, at George Washington on Saturday afternoon.
Alexis Dobbs led the Eagles with 15 points with Shaquilla Curtis notching 11 and Jen Dumiak chipping in 10. Curtis and Dobbs each pulled down a team-high six rebounds with Dumiak dishing out seven assists. Curtis had four steals on the afternoon.
The two teams traded buckets before George Washington (8-4) went on a 14-4 run to go up 24-14 at the 10:39 mark. Dobbs completed a four-point play to cut the lead to six with 7:55 remaining. Hannah Schaible converted a three-point play on the next possession to spark a 7-0 run and put the score at 37-24.
Dumiak drained a triple to cut the advantage to 10 but the Colonials were able to pull away with another 12-3 run for the 51-32 lead with 1:06 left. Abigail Fogg closed out the scoring in the first half with a bucket on the dish from Sarah Kiely as the Eagles went into the intermission down 51-34.
American (7-4) shot 32.4 percent from the floor and 35.7 percent from beyond the arc in the first half. George Washington shot 54.1 percent from the field and were 1-for-4 from three-point range.
The Colonials opened the half on a 5-1 run but the Eagles answered with five straight points to cut the advantage to 56-40 at the 15:52 mark. Fogg and Curtis posted back-to-back buckets for the 58-44 score and a jumper from Michelle Holmes cut the George Washington advantage to 63-48 with 10:46 to play.
Danni Jackson notched seven straight points to put the Colonials up 71-50. Curtis sparked a 6-0 run for American to cut its deficit to 73-58 with 5:03 remaining. The teams traded buckets down the stretch as George Washington was able to maintain its advantage for the 77-64 final score.
Jackson finished with a game-high 23 points and Chakecia Miller tallied 18. Caira Washington had eight rebounds as the Colonials held a 42-40 edge on the glass.
George Washington outshot the Eagles 45.6 to 36.9 percent from the floor. American was 5-for-21 from beyond the arc and the Colonials went 3-for-12 from three-point range.
The Eagles open Patriot League play on Thursday, January 2 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Bucknell. The game will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
